Budget Head Cooling Mod

Don't feel like shelling out $90-$200 on a head cooling mod? You don't need to if you're handy with fabrication.

Here's what I used:
(2) Brass freeze plugs ~$7 for 2 at Advance
(1) 5/8" T-fitting, your material of choice. I'm just using a plastic one for $3.
(2) 5/8" outlet 90 deg elbow fittings. I used Cummins P/N 3979410 that were in the scrap bin at work (free!). They're air compressor discharge fittings, and conveniently have a threaded base with a nut that makes a nice rigid base. You can make any variety of fittings work, whatever you have in your junk drawer, or go to your local hardware store.
~ 2 ft 5/8" heater hose.
Some solder and a torch.
Hose clamps.

Note: You won't need one of the freeze plugs and fittings if you re-use your passenger side head fitting, aka the "crack pipe" fitting.

1.) Drill out the brass freeze plugs to about the same diameter as your fittings.
2.) Thread the fittings into the holes. If you use regular fittings I suggest getting a nut to thread onto the base. This gives the solder more surface area to attach to.
3.) Get soldering. Hit the back side and the front.
4.) Install the freeze plugs into the back of the heads.
5.) Run the hoses, a short one from the passenger side to the T fitting, and a longer one from the driver side to the T fitting. Then connect the top of the T fitting to the heater core.

6.) De-aerate (burp) your system and top it off. Bam! Cheap head cooling mod!

Here's what mine looked like pre-soldering.

Does anyone forsee the couple threads of protrusion at the bottom of the fitting as an obstruction to coolant flow? The ports look pretty deep, and I figured this would give me more surface area for the solder to bond to, and make the joint more resistant to side loading.

I've been making this mod for Marauder's a while now.

BTW they're expansion plugs not freeze plugs
