low rpm lag, 4.6 dohc engine coolant plugs

Always wanting a Mustang, I recently bought a 97 cobra. Got a great deal and a cool ride. Unfortunately the kid who owned it before me did not hold it in such a high regard. I am trying to get it right again. I notice that there is a little lag from 2000 to about 2800 rpm, when i give it a little push. I changed the plugs (about 100k on them), changed the fuel filter (looked like muddy water falling out of it), and upon further investigation, pulled the manifold runners to clean them (finding them deleted, butterflys cut out and no filler metal added to the holes left behind). My question is, can I tune the computer to run without the manifold runners? it is getting expensive when i start replacing injectors, coil packs, etc... How do I adjust the timing? There are just so many possibilities. Also, can't find the engine coolant plugs to flush the engine. Thanks for your time.

yes u can tune the computer to disregard the deleted imrc's.u'll need a custom tune tho and a sct-4 bank chip. (others tuning chips may be available). you might need to pull the raditor hoses off to do a flush. i cant remember seeing plugs for coolant flushing

you got a b-head 4v with no imrc plates. they tend to be lacking in low end torque. you can fight that by having a tune on an SCT XCal. that will take care of the check engine light and timing/fuel can be adjsuted as well. that will help with your lack of low end power a bit. a gear change would help alot more, these engines scream up top though, nature of the beast.

Wow, a 4 bank chi isn't needed and an Xcal can't delete the IMRCs in the tune.

First, plug the holes that are in between the cylinders and at the end of the plates. the holes between the primary and secondary ports do not need to be plugged.

The ignition timing needs to be advanced because of the poor cylinder filling at low RPMs. You will need to get a tune to take care of this and that can be done via a dyno tune or a mail order tune. A mail order tune can be in the form of a chip or an emailed tune that you can install with an Xcal.

There are no "plugs" used for flushing the coolant.

Thank you for everything. According to my Chilton's there are engine coolant plugs above the oil pan rail on each side of the engine. It is very vague, though. It doesn't specify the engine it is talking about. Not very impressed with this manual. Is the Haynes better?

Hey greenjeans look to see if you have the SVT book that comes with it to for the coolant info show you how to to burt it ect.. if not i can type it up for you. also look and see if you can find a used timing adjuster forsale. very easy to work with and you can adjust on the spot for racing and what fuel ur running.

I do have the SVT book. It tells you how to fill it, not how to drain it. I guess that I'll just pull the hoses. Engine was missing because of the plug wires. Running great at the moment.....
