Question

Has anybody ever done a separate oiling system for a turbo

i have an 04 mach 1 and getting ready to peace together a turbo kit. I was just wondering if anybody has ever done or heard of a separate oiling system for the turbo, cause id rather do that then tap into my oil pan. So if somebody could shed some light on that would be nice thanks.

It's possible, but complex, expensive, and the reliability is questionable.

To run a stand alone system you'd need a pump of some sort, a reservoir, lines, a cooler, and a filter at the very least

The reservoir and lines would be easy, possibly a pain to package though. Your filter could just be a run of the mill remote mount oil filter, and throw in a liquid to air cooler somewhere.

The hard part is the pump. There are outside mechanical oil pumps, usually belt or gear driven, but they'd be tough to fit, and likely very expensive. The alternative is an electric oil pump. Some guys use these for tailpipe turbos. The problem is that the reliability isn't the best, and if your pump shorts out, your turbo isn't going to live too long. At the very least you'd want to monitor pump voltage as well as oil pressure and temperature. If you see that temperature or pressure get too high, you'd need to shut it down pretty quick.

I think it would be much more unpleasant to run a remote system than to just tap the pan.

...or you can always run ball bearing turbos.
