downshifting to 2nd gear

My trans seems to be doing fine until I try to downshift into 2nd gear. Sometimes if I go back to fifth then it will slip into 2nd. What can I do to cure this besides not downshifting.

try adjusting the shifter if an aftermarket shifter, If that ck's out ok, replace the 1-2 syncro

I don't have that problem but mine is upshifting to 3rd gear every now and then it just won't go into gear and if it does it grinds a little but after that it will fine for a little while and then act up again i was thinking about the syncro but to fix it it is 900.00 cdn and i am on the lookout for a t-56 trans

On my 88 ford escort gt if i shift from neutral into reverse it grinds, but if i shift into first then shift directly into revrese afterwards it dosent grind. Not sure what it is, but check the linkage if it dosent want to seem to go into gear it might not be engaging it fully.

Thats a clutch issue there, its because the mainshaft hasnt stopped spinning...your clutch is dragging when the pedals pushed in

Well it dosent always grind cause ive gotten used to shifting into first then reverse. Plus Im not sure if the clutch is gone cause the cluch dosent have but 80,000 miles on it. Anyways Id check the linkage to see if its fully engaging the gear

probably not but for less than $10 it can't hurt to try.
