Help! Bad Hesitation

Hey i just got a 99 cobra like 3 weeks ago with only 11,000 miles on it. So the other day i decided to really open it up for the first time. I was in third Floored it and at like 3800 rpm, the car just hesitates, and falls flat out on its face. i couldnt get it past 3800, cause it just started to slow down, but i can get higher up in first and second. The guy i bought it from though never really drove it, and it just sat in the garage. Any ideas on what could be wrong??

Could be alot of things. Does it smoke when this happens? Check/change fuel filter, check/change plugs, make sure each of the coils is in good shape and firing.

yea i did test drive it, and no it doesnt smoke at all.
