Rear Brake Tool

I was about to change my rear brake pads today when right before I was about to do it I was told I would need a "special" tool. Anyone know what this is? I was told I could get the old pads off but putting them back on would be impossible without it.

true....you can buy the true kit genius....yet you can go to sears or advanced and get this square tool....it has 2 dowels on each side of the block and you put a 3/8" ratchet on it so that you can trun/twist the caliper piston back in place. should be like $10 for that small item...its 80 or 150 pending the full kit you buy...i just boguht one for work that does bidirectional for european cars. the $80 kit..if you were to buy it is sufficient as is the small block tool alone....will post pic of the small tool i am speaking of.

Thanks a lot. He also said there was a piece that I could buy for the ratchet so that must be what you're talking about.

The tool is sold at most parts stores. It looks like this:Disc Brake Piston Tool ATD-5060 The rear pistons have to be screwed back in rather than pressed like the fronts. Sometimes you can use needle nose pliars to do the job.

You don't have to use any of those tools. To push the brake piston back in just use a c-clamp and push it in. I've done it before and it works just fine

you must be talking about the fronts cause on the rears it states that you have to screw them back in and thus why they have the indentations on them.

I've always just used a C clamp as well. Then again, I've never changed my brake pads either.

If you get the cube tool you might need to file out one of the pieces that stick out, it wasn't spaced enough to fit into my rear ones so I used a dremel tool and just filed it out a little bit and worked perfect. And any part store should have that cube, it was on the racks at Advance Discount when I bought mine.

well its half right

You can do what everyone I know does. Which is just take a pair of needle nose pliers and put them in the channels and turn the piston. The pliers will slip out ever 3/4 of a turn usually and can be annoying but its easily do able with no tool. I've never used one

But the down fall is over time they can get a little stripped and get to be annoying

Just use the needle nose pliers. Line the prongs up in the channels and turn them to the right. And if you wanna know for the front I just turned the pad around and put a c clamp in the middle of the pad and squeezed. That ensured both pads went down evenly

yea you can use pliers and such...it all depends on how hard it is to turn...some are easier than others for no apparent reason....but regardless know that with an integral park brake design in the rear calipers makes it so that one must rotate the piston back in...currently clockwise...and a c clamp or large vise grips or w.e. works fine for the fronts.

and this only applies to the fronts for these M.Y....older design mustangs probably had that style....yet not new design (sn95 or s197)....yet many current vehicles still have separate park brake and rear brake assemblies so one can still use c clamps and such like one does for the front....example would be like a tahoe or impala....i believe only the malibu, hhr, and cobalt have integral currently on gm models. (sorry gm tech here)

I've already did the fronts but all that was required for that was the compressor. I didn't have time to do the rears at that time.
