97 Cobra Weight Reduction Pics.

I'm always talking about my car and various ways to remove things.

Some people wanted an idea of what it looks like. So here it is.

Due to 5 image restriction here is the exterior.

Interior.

Shows battery in the trunk, pretty much all the panels missing. Passenger side door still is without a cover since I've been lazy.

I have a nice looking black handle from Home Depot that will serve as the passengers "oh shit" handle. Waiting for the black cover over that door before its bolted on.

So how much weight did all that save you?

Now before I get a bunch of "This is ugly" posts....

I simply dont care. Period. The outside looks nice which is all I care about.

I'm not trying to get chicks (i have one that I'll marry someday) sshh.

I never ever have more than 1 passenger.

The road/diff/fuel pump noise that I can now hear totally adds to the muscle car feeling.

When driving you can hear everything which serves to keep the senses keen since you can hear how fast you are going. No quiet floaty feeling which kind of distracts from reality. Any kind of tire traction loss is easily heard which I like.

The stock exhaust is much louder through the floor now and it sounds rather nice.

No one is going to steal it.

Best of all.... I'm beating cars with 100rwhp more and I can say its stock with weight reduction when they look confused.

No one expects this car with stock exhaust and normal idle to be so fast. I wouldnt call it a sleeper, but I get all kinds of people underestimating it.

I still have every single stock piece, bolt, panel, cover, sticker. I could completely return back to show quality in about a days work. Back seats never sat in, door panels scratchless, center console flawless, stock stereo and speakers etc. It looks like this because I want it to, it can still be a show car if I change my mind.

Let me know what you think

Lots. I dont have an exact number, but I'm just under 2800lbs empty. Doesnt seem like it but the pile of parts in my garage is so heavy I cant lift half the pile. Just the backseats stacked up plus the carpet on top is difficult to lift.

center console + headunits + rear panels are also getting quite tough to lift.

The sack of bolts/fasteners/screws/wire is about 15lbs.

It doesnt look like much but every little thing I did has added up.

You can remove 100lbs one time, or you can remove 1lb a few hundred times.

Now with any kind of motor work I'm expecting low 12s high 11s.

I had lighter racing seats at one point but I sold them because an idiot offered $400 more than I paid. I still can get a lighter drive shaft, install my Kmember, lighter battery, and delete the AC which I added back for the heat. Flywheel, control arms, solid front axle swap, coil overs, power steering delete, smog delete and forged rebuild will all shed more pounds when I get around to it.

Exhaust can be made lighter with off road X. Weld rims would be lighter. And I still want to pull my dash to get the sound deading back there.

If possible I'll fab up a custom dash to hold my gauges which would be the shit. But that will probably wait until next summer.

I think that you should look into getting rid of the pl/pw and some lightweight race seats.

pl/pw?

Sorry I'm not sure what means. Something about the seats?

10lb seats with good bolsters are totally on my list.

FutureMach

You live around here right? You should come by and go for a cruise sometime. You just have to ride in this car to understand the weight reduction thing.

2800lbs? I dont think so. Where did you get it weighed? There's no way you weigh that still having the factory k-member and A-arms, factory rims, AC, stock cobra front brakes, hood, seats, and exhaust. If that were the case you'd basically shead over 600lbs (factory weight is 3415) by gutting the interior?? Not gonna happen. All the stuff I've taken out of my car I'm only at 2960 and I've a full tubular front end, skinnies, CF hood, 1 race seat, and rear seat delete to name a few.

Thanks. It truly is more than you would think. I've since become quite addicted to this route after removing the backseats and passenger seat one day. Instantly felt like a different car. I came right back home and gutted the panels and trunk that same day. The gains were so good I stopped caring about looks.

Since my coworkers/friends with their Porches and Beamers wouldnt shut up about the handling I finally had to let them drive it to shut them up. They all like my car now and follow my progress. They joke that someday I'll be driving around in a tin box with a V8 and wheels.

My buddy with the 968 stopped talking shit now that his 200hp 4 banger is 200lbs heavier. The 968 is a rare front engine Porche. I think I have some pics I'll upload.

I'm trying to get him interested in the 97 Cobra since I think its one of the best years. 96 heating problems, 98 returnless fuel system 99+ sub par IRS which wouldnt stand up to a Watts link with no more teksid blocks and heavier new edge body. I just like the lightest cobra that can make wicked power levels.

I still think weight is where its at....Brains over brawn. All the newer cobras are far from 3375lbs stock. Especially without the aluminum blocks. I simply dont trust the non teksid aluminums to hold 700+hp.

As for looks..... Fabric is cheap and light. I never said I was done.... I plan to cover up everything and pay more attention to detail once I'm 100% finished pulling stuff as to not repeat my work.

Hardly anyone focuses on weight reduction. Its my way of being different. There are better ways to ride in style. I just wanna go fast.
