04 mustang cobra clutch

so i broke the input shaft on my trasmission so i am upgrading it to 26 spline. i had a spec stage 4 clutch. i am thinking about going with a centerforce dual friction (had one in my 98 cobra and liked it). if you get on centerforce's website they recomend that you dont reuse the flywheel?? does this sound normal. what is everyone else using for clutch/flywheel...is there a place to get a new steel clutch pad for the flywheel or can you have them resurfaced??

theres probably a shop around where you live that could fabricate another steel contact ring and rivet it onto the factory flywheel. ill do that sometime later when i get serious about getting the lowest ET out of my car.

I went with the centerforce dual friction and i went ahead and got their billet steel flywheel. the driveline clunk is MUCH more noticeable but ive had no problems with it.

centerforce's lightweight aluminum flywheel was 669 bucks.......fuck that

if the contact ring on the factory flywheel is within tolerances and if it isnt warped, then i think you could have it resurfaced. i would've done that but mine was all fucked up and warped.

been plenty happy with my spec stage 3+ and a fidanza flywheel. with more than 100 passes on the track, i would say its held up nicely.

9sec03cobra just installed a centerforce in one of his customers cars. PM him and ask him about the flywheel.

The problem is you had a Spec Stage 4 Clutch and a stock 10 Spline Input Shaft. The clutch was way beyond your power level so no way was it going to give out, the next part down the line which suffered was the Input Shaft. Since those are not the optimal design for the torque output of this car it simply gave out.

Now I think you are in the right direction by upgrading to a 26 Spline, as far as the clutch with your power level I would go with a Centerforce Dual Friction, or Spec Stage 2+. Unless you are planning on a Twin-Screw, or Nitrous at which point I would recommend several other clutches.

Hope that helped you out, and if you need any clutch parts let us know as we usually stock common items such as the Input Shafts, TOB Sleeves, etc. We specialize in Terminators.

You can resurface your flywheel. I had a centerforce DF on my car and it lasted maybe 5k miles. The disk is made of organic material. Organic disks are the same material that comes in OEM clutches. So why replace stock with stock. If anything I would upgrade to a stronger more agressive material like kevlar or better. I think you broke the input shaft cause the spec stage 4 is a non sprung hub puck disk. There isn't no slip in that puppy. If I were you and you were going to stay with spec I'd go down to a stage 3+. its a full face carbon metallic disk. Agressive material but the full face will allow smoother engagement than a puck style disk. I think if you put in a CF DF its not going to last long. I've done my share on research about clutches thats for sure. Before buy any clutch find out what the disk is made of and the pressure plate and its clamping force.

Actually I stand corrected.. the DF has a organic flywheel disk side and a carbon puck on the PP side. But still any high performance clutch should have organic anywhere.

I read the DFX series on their site but it doesn't say what the material is made of. But by looking at the pics of the disk it appears it might be carbon metallic material but I'd call them to confirm.

after further inspection its only a spec stage 3 clutch according to the placements of the rivits. there are no markings on it to identify so i wen to specs website and looked at the pictures. im having my flywheel looked at to see if ther is enough left on it to resurface...its getting close to the rivits...the flywheel from ford is 608$ list and 465$ my cost. so i might be looking at a new (aftermarket) flywheel. i see on ebay you can get a F1 racing? flywheel for 194 but i dont think that would be a good choice. has anyone had any experience using a fidanza clutch or flywheel? they arent priced too bad. for the clutch im thinkin im gonna go with a ceterforce DF or the spec stage 3...might try to get just a disc and reuse the pressure plate. after i get this fixed its dyno time then maybe a small dose of nitrous. any thoughts??

I would get an aftermarket flywheel. Reason being is on the aftermarket Flywheels (Spec and Fidanza) you can replace the friction plate for $60 instead of having to purchase a new flywheel.

As far as the Fidanza clutches they are great and I would recommend them with out a doubt.

i called spec and they said that i can get just a clutch disc for half the price of the kit. so i think im gonna go that route and just reuse my pressure plate. now i jsut have to decide on a flywheel.
