questions about a '97 cobra

just got a '97 cobra a couple of days ago and i have a few questions.. i'm sure the search feature would yield me the results i'm looking for, but i'm too lazy for that nonsense lol

what size are the stock brakes and would i be able to fit 15 inch wheels over them?

how do you guys go about having emissions checked with longtubes and an offroad midpipe for example? a tuner would get the car to tell the emissions computer that everything was fine and dandy, but what about when they look under the car to check for cats? or will the tuner tell the emissions computer that the car has cats so they don't have to look under it?

let's say i wanted to save a little bit of money - would it be possible/safe to run an 87 octane tune?

and last but not least, i'd like to hear what kind of shifters you guys are using and your feedback on them, since that will be the first thing i buy

only way ur going to pass the visual inspection is if the dude is lazy and overlooks it or he's "lazy, and overlooked it."

15 will only fit with a spacer if i remember correctly.

as for inspection, depends on how strict your state is on them. if cats must be in stock location, if it just has to pass the sniffer, both, etc.

with falling gas prices finally, you still pinching for 87???

i love my steeda shifter, it has the perfect feeling.

+1 on the gas and the steeda shifter, i live in texas, i was just going to pay some cheap ass shop extra to pass it. Just ask around at car meets and races, they will tell you who can hook you up.

I'd try to at least run the 91oct BWAL, these cars are tuned from the factory for 93oct. My car sees only 94oct, or 93 when she's done in the carolinas.

at least 91 octane, you need spacers for 15s on the front

unless the guy cuts you a break you will fail with lontubes and catless mid pipe, both visual and smog inspection

MILs will get rid of the engine code saying there is no cat, but it will fail a visual test and a smog test if they do that in your area

Just go ahead and get the 93 tune bro, you wont regret it.

Also you will never get that car to pass emissions unless you lose the tubes, but there are shops that will pass em for ya. If you can't find one up there let me know and ill put in a shout for ya if you wanna drive to clayton county to get it smogged. Unless it has to be smogged in the same county. I would know because my county doesn't require emissions testing

And also, look into the Pro 5.0 shifter. Thats whats on my T45 GT and I love the feel of it, the shifter handle is a little long though so I did replace it with a steeda handle.

I'd have to say this:

1. For 15's I think you need spacers.

2. Probably won't pass without cats, depends on how strict yuor area is. I know in my town they are pretty lazy as far as checking under the car unless your car is too loud or your throwing a CEL.

3. Don't skimp on gas.

4. Go with MGW imo, I have also heard the Tri-ax is good for the 5 speed.

my friend has a T45 and the pro 5.0 isnt all that great, compared to a T45 that has a tri-ax i really dont like it, but if he would change the shifter handle, maybe itd be different but its still really sloppy

If you're in Cali, you will NOT pass with long tube headers, no way, no how. (well, okay, you can "pass", but you can't pass).

Don't skimp on lower octane gas... ever. Seriously, if you can't afford the extra dollar or two per tank, you can't afford to drive a Cobra. Mine isn't happy on 91, and that's on a stock tune. If I'm gonna be doing anything beyond commuting, I make a trip out to the racetrack and get a half-tank of 96.

I run a Tri-Ax, all I can compare it to is the stock shifter, of which it's 10 billion times better. I highly recommend replacing the clutch quadrant while you're at it, there was a thread yesterday or the day before about shifters, I detailed more there.
