oil pressure issue.

okay so since i've had the car the oil pressure has always flucuated, sometimes it'd run at the A in NORMAL sometimes it runs at the O. Just curious if this is something i should worry about or is it just normal. for it to go up and down.

I would be willing to bet its the gauge, they are usually pretty inaccurate. Naturally your motor will lose a little oil pressure once it reaches operating temperature. The only way to know for sure is to hook up a mechanical gauge.

I'll tell you what I used to tell my customers back in the day. Ignore the gauge. It's electrical, and doesn't show accurate pressure. It's there pretty much for show, not so much for function. If you want to know or monitor your actual pressure, get a manual gauge. That factory gauge doesn't account for air pockets, spikes in pressure, or changes in engine speed.

With a new sending unit, my 20 year old factory gauge always read the same as my autometer mechanical gauge (although the increments are much larger). I was surprised.

It is normal for oil pressure to fluctuate with operating temperature. It should be higher when cold and lower when warm. If it is getting close to the red on the low end, then you have a problem. Otherwise, it is fine. If you see it fluctuating rapidly, that is usually because of low oil level.

Same here...As far as I know my sending unit is the original one, and my factory gauge reads the same as the mechanical I hooked up. I guess I am lucky, because all my friends factory gauges blow.

Of course naturally, I ate my own words today...my oil pressure went south in my Bronco on my way home from work, I mean it dropped severely. I was going to add a quart or two, but instead ended up changing the oil. Turned out my filter was clogged with coked oil that got burnt when the motor overheated as a result of tossing the belt the weekend after Thanksgiving.

go buy a 15$ guage to double check it... you dont even have to mount it if it does it at idle...

i think this is why people make fun of you... you are telling him to change lifters and check the oil pump... you could have him tearing his center head off for something that could be a gauge...

if it has done it since he got the car then id say it isn't an actual problem and on top of that as oil ages it can change pressure slightly...
