Yes. You have to take both out and the whole ring and carrier out

everything must come out. Why are you pulling just ur pinion anyway? just curious. If you are replacing ur gears, you need to ask someone who has done it before to help you setting them up bro, it is not a novice job for sure, or even an intermediate imo.

i'm definitely not doing it myself, my uncle used to be a mechanic and knows how to do it, i was just curious if it all had to come down. yes i am replacing gears, going 4.10; also rebuilding the trac-lok white its out and adding a new trickflow girdle

Make sure that when u start taking it apart I can't remember the name but the big u "clamps" holding the ring and carrier in have 1 arrow on each make sure u mark which is left and right, and the arrows have to be pointing out away twords the tires

He said U clamps & I was asking if he meant C-clips. But after re-reading it I am guessing he meant the bearing caps.

i really think you should do a write up with pics on the whole procedure because im about to do the exact same thing to my car.....also how do gears affect your trap speed at the track....i have heard people say that they went faster and some said that have gone slower
