My "new" 5.0 GT
Hey everyone. First time poster here. I recently bought a 1993 GT, and I'm verry excited about it. I've never owned a Ford before, I've had a Jetta, Accord, and now finally this! I have a few questions though! It doesn't look soooo perfect right now, it does need new paint, but I'm very excited. It's the reef blue with the silver bottom.
The front piece of the AC pulley rattles and since then, the AC has refused to work from what the previous owner told me. Should I just replace that single pulley... or should I go with a set of performance ones, or it it possible that this isn't even the problem? This car runs warm. The temp gauge stays at about halfway, and just slightly above. Is this too hot for the car? I don't know the exact temp, but the min is 130, and the max is at 170. I just replaced the radiator cap, and I'm going to flush the whole system this weekend, but I'm looking for some input on this. Finally, haha. For my Accord I bought an AEM short RAM intake, and I see that they also make a Brute Force intake for my model Mustang. Would this be a good buy? I fell in love the sound and the little extra boost of power it made in my Accord, would it be worth it to purchase the Brute Force one for my GT? Sorry for the length, but I'm just very excited, and I know next to nothing about the mechanical aspects of Ford models so be gentle please! |

well congrats on the new ride, it's a step up from an accord for sure. for the intake, all you are really paying for is the name and tubing(most of them anyway) so if you want to save some money you can buy a cheap one on ebay and get a nice filter for the end of it. ones that mount in the fender-well work best. if your interested in the sound of you car then i'd suggest you look into some cat back exhausts, there are a lot of quality manufactures, but my personal preference has always been magnaflow. good luck with you new car

+1 on the ebay cold air intake with a good k@n filter on it. after that do an h pipe and cat back, and a set of 3;73 and you'll have a very quick car.

A cold air intake is not a bad idea. It is not going to be anything you will "feel" though. If I was going to get an intake tube, I'd go for a fender mount model, not one that lays in engine bay.
The AC pulley, is more than just a pulley, it is a clutch. That AC clutch system may need to be rebuilt. I would try to get a status of the rest of the AC system though before spending money on the AC clutch though. It consists of a clutch, a bearing, a coil, and a hub. I've never had to fix one and I don't know if there is a common issue or a quick fix. Someone else will have to provide some input. The stock gauge is a not accurate so you may have a bad indication or the car may actually be running hot. It should run above at least about 190F during normal operation which on both of my Mustangs, is between 1/4 and 1/2 of the scale up from the bottom. Post some pictures of the car and the engine bay. EDIT: Damn, from the time I started typing this until I finally got around to posting it, 5 people said almost the same thing. Don't you people have jobs

congrats on the purchase man, glad ya like your car. I agree with everyone above on the cold air intake, as well as the issue with the a/c compressor it's probably due to the clutch inside that engages when the a/c is turned on, it works off of ball bearings which overtime can wear down. Might still wanna take it to a shop for a 2nd opinion, and either have the clutch rebuilt in it, or if you don't care much about AC then look into deleting the AC all together, and free up about 8-10hp. As far as the temp problem i had the same exact problem when i bought mine, i ended up realizing that the thermostat housing was leaking, so i replaced the gasket as well as installed a 180* thermostat and it fixed the problem now the needle never moves past the O in normal when i'm driving it normal, it'll sometimes get around middle of the gauge if i let it idle for 15 mins or more, or if i'm racing it 3 or 4 times in a row, otherwise never had a problem out of it. oh and if you're riding somewhere and notice it getting warm like past the midway point, just turn the heat on full blast in the floor, this will let the heater core act kinda like a second radiator cooling things off.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The little piece on the very front rattles around and is kind of out of place. I don't want to remove it yet since I'd have to take off all of the belts... but if I have to I will.... |

nice find... and about the cooling issue. another thing that can wear out over time is the clutch in the coolant fan

Yeah, it's an auto trans.
As far as I know the car is completely stock. Once I get all the plugs changed, and flush the coolant system, hopefully I'll be good to go. I'm not concerned about the AC nearly as much as I am the temp issue. I bought a thermostat that I'm going to install on Friday once I get lots of free time. Also.... the car was mostly sitting in a yard for 3 years, got less than 1000 miles, so maybe it just needs to be driven a bit? Who knows.... Last edited by Firaga; January 6th, 2009 at 07:38 PM. |

there is a post a little farther down of a guy who is eliminating the a/c on his car. You may want to see if it is something you guys can work a deal on. Congrats on making it to the "friendliest' mustang site on the net.

if you dont have the a/c clutch fixed it can lead to you sitting on the side of the road
