Problem with my Notch.

I haven't had time to really look into a problem that I have with my Notch. The other day I was driving home and I noticed a slight squealing sound along with a soft rattle/clank coming from under the hood. When I got home I popped the hood, listened a bit and shut her off. My conclusion was that a pulley was shot. I let her sit for a few days and yesterday decided to check into it a bit more. I went to start the car up and there was a horrible grinding/squealing sound coming from the motor, definately not a pulley. It was so bad I didn't even chance starting the car up.

1 friend thinks its the water pump and another guy suggested taking the belt off to see if the sound is still there to narrow down the pulley diagnosis. Any thoughts or ideas?

Yeah remove the belt and turn all your pulleys by hand. You should be able to feel the bad one.

It was the Alternator. I am just gonna get a 130 amp alt and call itgood anyhow. I am going to replace the smogpump pully as well considering it seems to be going as well.

If your getting resistance or play on the the smog pump it's not the pulley it's the pump. The pump has bearings in it and the pulley attaches to the flange on the pump. You will have some resistance on the smog pump but it should be light similar to the water pump or power steering pump.

Hey thanks, yeah it has alot more resistance than the p/s or water pump. Must be part of the problem. Time to do a smog delete I guess.

Yeah, rip the smog pump off and the tubes going to it. Drop like 30 lbs right there. Make sure you plug the back of the heads though.

84.5 inch belt, just skip the smog pump until you delete it

Can anyone tell me how to reroute the belt, the 84.5 inch seems a bit long even when skipping the smog pump.

Yeah I have had alot of stuff come up so I have been storing the car at a buddies place. In the process of installing the 3.55's, MSD Box, doing a rear brake job, and putting the battery back under the hood instead of in the back seat where the previous owner had it, etc. Hopefully be able to take her to the local track in a couple weeks.

We were routing the belt wrong to bypass the smog pump.

The solution to the original problem was a bad alternator. Got a nice new 130amp.
