had a bad experience any ideas...

last night here it was 16 degrees with the wind chill it was around 2 degrees. i left work, and noticed that the heat would not get hot...then noticed the motor getting hot...my first reaction was how the hell did this happen...i pull over pop the hood and the block is cold enough for me to touch. So i had text anthony(white thunder) see if he had any ideas. Kinda figured it was the gauge messing up. So i get back in the car drive about 5 more minutes and the temp is getting hotter and hotter, so i ignore figuring it was the gauge. Then notice steam pouring out from the hood so i pulled over again, Coolant had bubbled outta the radiator, so i checked the the overflow, it was full. So the car was hot enough to overheat, full of coolant yet the heat wouldn't get hot. Well coolant kept bubbling over, so it was low at that point so i waited a while to cool off while freezing my ass off eventually made it home. Put more antifreeze and water in the radiator. Started it up and ran fine i drove about an hour to make sure and has been fine since. What i'm thinking happened. is that when i fixed the coolant leak a while back i didn't put the right mix of antifreeze and water and it froze inside the block...what do you guys think??

probably had the thermostat freeze shut until it overheated in the engine and forced it open.

i had this same thing happen when using shitty antifreeze or not mixing rich enough.
Also when buying a thermostate don't cheap out. but a good quality one. mine themostate stuck once as well. not fun i feel for you man.
drain it, change thermostat and fill with good prestone.

it is definetly worth the extra buck. I will never by a cheapie again. $8 difference to freeze my ass off, then spend half the day figureing out what is wrong, and thawing out all the line.
NO thank-you

yea i hear and it was just some $8 thermostat from advance, i was just more worried that it had cracked the block or something from freezing the coolant, may have just been the thermostat though.

Holy shit, the exact same thing happened to me yesterday, I thought my water pump went out, my car just started to over heat so i pulled over and shut the car off and the fluid was coming out of the overflow but the radiator was full so u think I should change my fluid as well and change the thermostat?

i thought pretty much all of them were made fail safe now? I have to wait till the weather warms up and i get time off work to mess with the car, I think I am going to try and put it in a buddies garage then drain all the coolant and change the thermostat and get new fluid. then see what happens.

Hopefully it was something simple, either way... get a coolant tester, they are like $5 at Wal-Mart
