4 speed foxbody stang?
Got a quick question, dont know how early this idea may be shot down.
supose i want to slap in a ford 4 speed manual gearbox into a 89 gt 5.0, and it had a AOD, aside from the obvious parts, what, if any, bellhousing would work, clutch, etc....? |

check how the clutch fork is set up, some were pull style and some were push style, other than that any bell housing for a sbf will bolt up.

i Know the 79-81 or 82 had a 4 speed in them, it may have been behind the 4.2 but its the same bellhousing pattern

I belive they completley got rid of the 4 speed in 84 dont hold me to that.
Cause im pretty sure 82 or 83 was the first year they offered the 5 speed as an option not as the standard manual. Then in 84 they got rid of the 4 speed and made the 5 speed standard. Why would you wanna put a 4 speed in an AOD? Im guessing just cause you got one laying around and its convinent. I say dont do it. If its an older 4 speed you got a 1:1 final gear ration wich isnt over drive and you'll be sucking gas like none other. I say save your money for a good 5 speed and then you'll have a lower first gear plus an over drive to cruise 1500 miles down the interstate no problem

i doing it because its laying around and conveinent, but also because i want a 4 speed. if i wanted a 5 speed i wouldnt of bothered to sell the last t-5 i had at the same time i got the 4 speed, and i dug the four speed out of a 4 cyl four-eye mustang i got from when i did a part time at the salvage yard. but the 4 speed will be just for a road race run, eventually when i save up a bit i want to get me a good TKO trans to shove in it, keeping it cheap right now (just had a daughter born!).

the 4 speed also has a ball bearing set around the input shaft which wont hold up for long under a serious load from the 5.0. thats why the roller bearings are used now. and the input shaft itself is smaller by far than even the 5 speed 4cyl t5. I have one of these old 4 speeds here at home with a bell housing to match if youre interested pm me.

actually i'd be up for looking for any good swap in, i gota 5-speed bellhousing, but the t-5 that was with it was gone when i found it, so i got the ready able ability to toss one in, just minus the actual trans itself for a 5 speed. but 4 or 5 speed, i dont care, i just want a stick in it, last automatic suffered a lovely snapping of the tailshaft when the converter caught late one day.

Best thing to do with the SROD is scrap it. WC t-5 at a minimum, I'm using a "66 cast iron toploader that I had face plated at Liberty's but it would make a shitty street or road race trans. Shifts smooth as butter at 7800 though!
