heater core

well i replace my heater core about 1 month ago and its been working good enough to keep me warm. but last night when i went to pick up my friend i started smelling anti freeze. so when i got there i stoped the car and looked on the passenger side and the floor was wet.

looks like im going to by pass the heater core now. its a shame bc it took me some time to replace it and im not going to do that again

Dont make the same mistake again. Go to a ford parts dealer and get the original ford part. I bought one from autozone and checked around and everyone on here said get a new ford one. I compared the two and the ford was a shit ton more heavy duty.

yeah i've had the pleasure of doing a total of 4 now, one for my car and the other 3 were for friends. I used the ford one and it really is better. The second time really is alot easier.

Can you still use the AC if you delete the heater core? I don't need the heater 'cause I live in a hot country so I wouldn't mind the weight saving. How much does the heater core weigh?

They are behind the dash. Basically have to pull the dash out.
Not hard per-say, just a time consuming PITA

Next time I do mine I'm going to try and fit a 96-02 core in mine.
They are almost the same size, but made of Aluminum instead of Copper.

One thing I learned while pulling the dash out of a 2.3 car and a 5.0 car, (5.0 swap)... Dont take the large plastic dash part off of the metal dash framing. Take the entire assembly out. That way your wires stay on it and there are less pieces to put back on... less headache in the long run.

After you get the dash out, the heater core is inside the big black air box.. I didn't replace my heater core when I had the dash out, so I dont know how to take it out of the box.

And +1 on the person who recommended the Ford heater core. Those auto zone/oreillys parts are cheap knock offs at best, and for something this hard to replace, personally I would pay a little more for a better part so I wouldn't have to do it again..
