Rear end broke in half!!! =(
We just got our 65 mustang on the road and i guess the 5.0 we built for it is a little to powerful for that little 8" rear end the car had... I got on it off the line and it snapped in half!! haha ok, so my question is what rear end will bolt directly into the 65 with limited slip and disk brakes. I NEED HELP!!!!!

a nine inch is as close are you going to get to a direct bolt in, thats weird tho 8"s are actually none to be fairly beefy and can be built to last

alot of cars had a nine inch, your best bet is to find a old ford pick up, i have 2 nine inches in my back yard, look on your local classifieds.
an 8 inch is only different from a 9 inch because of that 1inch, its often called the baby 9, you just happen to have a bad one, my buddies has a 550 rwhp ford maverick with his stock 8 inch, i have one in my 385hp mustang II. but will soon be swapping in my narrowed 9 with disk brakes soon. 8 inch parts are getting scarce and harder to get a hold of. |

well. Like i said this is in a 65. I threw a roller 5.0 in with a set of milled and ported gt40p's, trick flow stage 1 cam, trick flow dual wound springs, ford racing 4 barrel intake, ford racing shorties, and holley 650.. the car has the original 3 speed stick. Its real fun to drive, we just got it done thursday. The car sounds great. i just need to get this rear end.

We put an 8.8 in our 65 coupe. Not that bad of a job. Limited slip 8.8 will be less expensive than a 9" and easier to find.

yea go snatch an 8.8 and make sure all the clutches in the LSD are good before you put it in so you dont have to rebuild it a while down the road

you can go with a 9" but i'd imagine a well built 8.8 would do the trick. I've known people to run well over 500 hp with 8.8's

you might wanna move this thread to the classic mustangs section because they will know what vehicle has a rear that will bolt right in with lil modification.

The explorer 8.8 seems to be one people use for a swap because it is already 5 bolt and 31 spline if you want to go that route. Here is some info, google turns up tons of info on the swap.
Here's one link for using a fox body 8.8 The Ford 8.8 Mustang Rear End - Car Craft Magazine

Used one from a 92 Explorer, width is off a tad but still works nice.
