Well with what ever diff you choose you need axles to match. The 31 spline is far superior to the 28. The actual I.D. is larger which makes it stronger.

you would need one for an 8.8

what are you trying to do with the car? slight up grade.. all out?

There are many different set ups you could go with.

stock 8.8 was 28 spline, 31 is stronger and you can get a 31 spline track lock out of explorers that had the tow package, f150's with the tow package and 4x4 rangers

well i got some 3.73 gears and i tought that it would be a good time for me to changed the rear end so i can get rid of the one wheel burn outs

Im startng to go to the local drag strip and i just got some new rims and tires on the way and im also looking to build the motor when i take my motor rebuild class in spring but i also want some that i can still drive on the street
so what would my best way to go

if you have the money get the 31s you will also need new axles if you do that your stock i belive is 28 so you can get a new 28 spline diff and not change the axles if you cant afford that.

Theres a great write-up on that, made by ryans88gt. Read it through and you should have good idea what kind of job it is. You can find the sticky thread on top of the 5.0 forum.

If you are going to do the gear swap yourself, the trac-lok rebuild is cake in comparison.

I agree just rebuild what you have until you have the power to warrant an upgrade to 31 spline axles

whats the better idea in yall's opinion,... replace old worn out trac-loc with used explo/ranger/f150,... or rebuild the existing one?

buy the gears and the rebuild kit and take it to a shop and have it done. The rebuild wont cost any more the the gear set up. If your not sure of the rebuild you wont want to do the gear set up your self.

For sure the gear swap is the harder of the 2. I can usually rebuild a trac lok in about 2 hours while drinking beer.
