How to: Short throw return fix

Once you get used to one style of shifter it's hard to get another one.. and If you already have a t5/t45 short throw laying around, here is a 5 cent fix to get rid of the sloppy-ness!

This is an old old Hurst t5 short throw on ebay I got for twenty bucks. It has external stops, short pivot joint and nice re curved handle.

When I bolted it on the trans I had laying around, it felt solid, but the return to neutral from 2-3 wasn't there, it was just hang up leaving it in the 1st and 2nd gear column. I took it apart and looked at it...

Pull the shifter out of the car via 4 13mm bolts

Dig through your random bucket of bolts and find a bolt that's head is roughly 1mm thick and that the threads will fit inbetween the spring itself. If the bolt is longer than the spring, cut it down some so it doesn't bind up. I used this little trim piece from a washer/dryer cover, you can see the general shape, not rocket science..

Slide it inside the spring..

Orientate the shifter like it would be if you were sitting in the car. Take the shimmed spring and put it on the right side (where 5th and Rev are). Now this is shimmed, hence making a higher coil bind rate and stiffening response.

Place other spring on left side with standard shim facing down.

Take the middle ring piece and slide it over the springs and shifter lever. Now take the 4 t25/or t30 (I forgot, med sized ones) torx bits and 2 metal retainer tabs and bolt them down. Torque them down pretty decent as the new shim will be a little harder to tighten up all the way.

Place shifter back on trans. Tighten up the 4 13mm bolts.

Feel the shifter now. Place the lever in Neutral, pull to the left and line it up with 1st and 2nd. Before it would just stay there and hang up, now it will spring back to true neutral (3rd/4th column). After I did this, the shifter feels just about as good as my pro 5.0 I had in my cobra.

One day I may just buy a nice MGW or Tri Ax, but for $20.05, This little hurst base plate will save me from overshifting and now I don't have to worry about slamming it into 1st when trying to power shift 2-3.

I hope this helps someone, if not it has lots of pictures and your probably really bored, so o well. LOL

-Cheers,

Randy
