The 84 water pump will be a standard rotation and the 89 will be a reverse rotation. If your keeping the 84 V belt and pullies, you need to stay with a standard rotation pump and yes it will bolt to the 89 engine. I would buy a new pump however.

for a cheap up grade look at the late 70's or early 80's 351w. They had a heavy duty cooling option, aluminum higher volume factory water pump.

and as stated above, using vbelts needs to be pre serpentine waterpump

Is your water pump pulley grooved or smooth?

Someone may have just replaced the water pump with a newer style water pump.

Anyway, any 302-351w style water pump will work on any 265-351w block. You just have to know which way to spin them and what gaskets to get. Also, if you still have a mechanical fan, you want that to be spinning the correct direction as well.

now i am confused. so the 84 never came with a sepentine belt, and the pump turned clockwise. however i have a serp belt and a counter clockwise pump.
if he was just to change the pump, would he not have to change all the pully stystem aswell?
