if its the sound you like then you want a flat tappit lifter not a solid roller. but yes dont make sound a goal make it a positive bi product of power.

hydraulic lifters can have two problems at high spring pressures and high rpm

Lifter collapse, which is when the plunger collapses and you get excess valve train noise. This can hurt pushrods, rockers and the cam from having too much lash in the valve train. It will not hurt pistons and valves.

The other problem is lifter pump up, which is when the lifters can't bleed enough oil out under high rpm and push the plunger up to the retaining ring removing all preload from the lifter. This causes the valves to open 0.020-0.030" further than they would normally and to not close completely. This results in loss of power from the valves not closing but will not cause damage unless you are running an extremely too tight PTV clearance.

Advantages of solid roller is basically that you don't have to worry about the above two problems and can run a lot higher spring pressure and thus ramp rates of the cam can be more agressive. The down side is more maintenance and shorter valve train life (especially with monster springs). However, you can get a tight lash street roller that will last a long time with reasonable springs and direct oiled roller lifters.

+1 I thought "lifter float" was "lifter collapse"

I can find much info on lifter float, Ive heard the term, but cant find much.

I'm pretty positive that "lifter float", and "valve float" are not the same thing.

I would think any kind of float is when the spring can no longer control the valve train motion. So lifter float would be when the lifter comes off the cam lobe because the spring can't hold it down?

Darrell has been MIA for awhile.

Not only going just for sound, I just think they sound great. I was looking at them for performance reasons.
