Detonation and Preigntion definition

can anyone tell me what it actually sounds like or if it backfires and which one does what

its pretty much the same thing. detonation is when the air/fuel mixture ignites on the compression stroke and not the power stroke. thats why you hear the knocking or pinging. usually when you run bad gas or you have carbon build up in your cylinders. if you have carbon build in your cylinders your car will wanna keep runnin after you shut it off because the carbon is glowing hot and is still igniting the mixture kinda like a diesel with glowplugs.

backfiring is usually a timing issue because the cylinder is firing when the exhaust valve is starting to open or already open
