What would you recommend?

I've got my 88' hatch that I'm building. Its gonna have a 600+ hp 408w with a 200 shot of nitrous on it(motor should be done in about 1 week). I want this car to be a nasty street car. It currently has a 4.10 gear with a manual trans in it but thinking maybe I should go to a 3.31,3.55 or 3.73. What gear would you recommend?

keep the 4.10s and stay with the manual trans, my 436 is going to be a stick, I'm tired of the auto

Just think the more power you make the least amount of gear you need. I'm changing from 4.10's to 3.73's.

I'm just thinking with 4.10 is too much gear and will run out of top end.

wow with 4:10 or more your gonna run out of gear at the big end. i love the people on here who think just because a gear sounds cool and is a "bigger" number, you should choose that one. i have a 408 with a 3000 stall and 3:55 gears and a C4, at 2500rpm im doin 55 on the highway. i would also recommend goin to an auto in your car, you wont regret it.

Sounds like a 3.55 might be the way to go. I kinda want to stay manual trans though just for the fun factor.

What kind of racing are you doing? dig or roll? this matters big time in gear selection.

for the" 1/4 " I would get 4:10's or higher, but if you are racing on the track(highway) I would pick up a 3:55 to 3:73 at most.

3.55 all the way, and higher and you might be a little unstreetable with that power

Dont go any lower ratio (higher number) than a 3.55 if you are going to be driving it on the street with a 5 speed manual. You will shift every 2 seconds because the rear ratio will make your gears a LOT closer together... it will be a pain in the ass to drive in town.

BUT If its just for track use, then you only need to run through the gears 1/4 mile at a time, and it wont be quite as much of a pain in the ass.

I run 4:10's with a 26x10.50 tire, with a C4, I love it. All you manual guys, keep on thinking you are going FAST with that 5 speed

if you want to get into automatics you cant go wrong with a c4, but if you really wanna get into it, AOD with 4r70w "wide ratio" gears is the way to go.

you can run those 4:10`s for the track, but from day to day driving you dont notice the high ratio.

This car is intended ror 95% street and 5% track. The car is also more set up for handling than drag racing. I have a 3.31 I just took out of my wifes new mustang but could go 3.55 as well.

If it will spend most of it's time on the street then 3.73, what trans are you going to run? with the horse's you are going to run you will need a good trans. Remember shifting gears is what makes driving a Mustang fun.
