fueling while running

I always see people filling up their vehicles while they keep it running. I was always told to turn off a vehicle because some/maybe most vehicle have in tank pumps which could somehow cause a spark and boom.

but what about vehicles with mechanical pumps mounted on the side of the engine? tank has nothing in it but fuel.

lets discuss this and see what ya'll have to say on this deal

I doubt there's any danger. I fill up all the time w/ the engine running and my parents said that when they were my age no one ever turned there engine off.

My best guess is that they are trying to avoid someone driving off w/ the pump handle still in the car. It also might be that they don't want people to build up a static charge from getting in and out of there car (maybe people leave engine on to keep AC or heat running and get in car).

On OBD-II cars (96 and up), it may throw a code for an EVAP failure but that code should clear on its own when that test runs again.

Actually my uncle was filling his squad car quite a few years back, and they never turned there cars off when filling up the tank, and somehow the whole thing exploded and he now suffers from lung issues and they don't have a cure for his ailment but they do know that he has a lot of scar tissue in his lungs which is basically just dead worthless lung tissue and they believe the scar tissue is from the explosion.

I think in this situation the saying, "Better safe than sorry" most definitely applies. I know my brother said when he visited the wifey's parents in alaska they never shut their damn vehicles off, for obvious reason.

I would say you also may have to worry about static electricity.

Around here in the 'hood.. I'm more worried about someone jumping in and stealing the car while Im filling gas than a fire..so I shut it off and take the keys out.

I just see no sense in keeping it running.. Regardless of the weather, I am always outside holding the pump nozzle and listening, because the damn thing never shuts off fast enough. (gas sprays all over side of car)

Really, static electricity forms regardless if the engine is running or not. When you get in and out of the vehicle, you usually become statically charged. Thats why they say do not get back in your car when you are fueling. There are numerous youtube videos to back this up..

most of time that the whole explosion happening is when its cold outside, people go back in their car and come out, having static built up from coming off the seat. and go out and boom.

And a lot of professional football players go out to clubs with a loaded pistol in their wasteband. Sometimes those statistics catch up with you
