Grinding Or Shaking Sound
This is gonna be hard to explain but i'll try my best. When the RPM's get between 900 to 950 I hear what seems to be a grinding noise coming from the front. My idle is set to 800 RPM and if i give it gas to go, as soon as it gets to about 950 something grinds and when I get to 1000 and above RPM's it stops completely and i dont hear it again till i go to stop and it grinds again but only in that RPM range of 900 to 950 or so. Its a 92 LX 5.0 AOD.
EDIT: I don't think its the brakes cause it does it no matter if my foot is on the brakes or not.

can you duplicate it sitting still by just revving the engine in neutral to 950?If so, remove the serpentine belt and see if it will still do it then. post your results.

sounds like a bad bearing somewhere, either in an accessory or idler/tensioner pulley. the shaking issue though gives the possibility of your balancer maybe being bad. try having someone rev the car up for you while you look under the hood to see where the noise is coming from. Of course if you took the belt off as was suggested earlier that may narrow your problem down to a bearing or balancer.

yeah ill try those ideas. thanks. as far as the shaking, i should of said like a rattle. kind of like very small pepples in a can shaking slowly.

still have cats? If so, might be a heat shield. Those are good for the welds breaking. Easily fixed with a large hose clamp or an off-road h-pipe.

I think i found it. the alternator seems to be going again. good thing i still have the warranty for it. im going to take the belt off and turn the alt and see if it makes noise. if it does im going to take it off and go get me a new one.

ok well i took off the belt and started turning each pulley and it seems the alt. is fine and the only thing making noise and is loose is the P.S. pump pulley. is this normal. could it be the PS pump its self or just the pulley.

just need to ck for any looseness or roughness. There should be a small amout of endplay present in the ps pump. Sometimes spinning them while listening to them with a mechanics stethospcope helps since there's no load on anything with the belt off.

in and out movement should be roughly 1/16" or so. as for it "wobbling", sounds as if the pulley may be warped.

I read the thread and it does not say if you started and ran the motor with the belt off? Did you? Was the noise gone? Remember you will have no water pump so keep the running to a minium. I just don't think spinning the pulleys in your hand can put the tention needed on them to recreate the problem.
Just my .02 cents |

ok i just ran the car with the belt off and yes i did here it when it got up to 950 RPM or so then turned it off. put the belt back on and took it for a test drive and what ever it making that sound, sounds like it may be also coming out the back of the car also. maybe out the exhaust. when the car gets cooler and the exhaust im gonna check the heat shields. if not that maybe something happened to the insides of the converter i should get the codes checked also cause the check engine light comes on some times.

ok heat shields are ok. couple welds broke but not making the sound but what i do see is some kind of metal tube or something like that hitting the h pipe. its on the passenger side close to the piece that connects both sides of the H pipe. and oil is all up underneath that car. every thing is covered. i guess i better get that leaking rear main seal fixed soon.

So with this new information...its not a accessory. Time to listen to see what ya hear. Remember the parking brake will activate only the backl brakes so that a good well to hear braking problems. Is it a stick? Throw out bearing?

nah its an AOD. i think i found it. seems like theres a metal tube hitting the h pipe cause i hear it coming out the exhaust. my friend used to drive it and she hit her share of speed bumps in it and i know the muffler hangers broke off. so im sure she messed up the H pipe too.

thanks for all your guys help. i found out it was the air tube was moving due to the clamp not being tighten and hitting the H pipe. got it tightend up and no more sound.
