86 Mustang GT SVT/SVO?!?!?!?!?

I recently pruchased an 86 mustang from a friend for a very very cheap price. The VIN states it's a GT wich is correct... but it also has an SVT emblem on the dash above the glove compartment, and after my research I found out that SVT's weren't made until '93. Is it possible that it is an SVT which i assume is the Cobra and not the SVO? I have contacted one of the previous owners and he said he purchased it with the emblem and he him self never knew the exact info on the car. He mentioned that the owner before him had swapped out the rear end to a 373, and mentioned something about the backlighting on the intrument cluster being red?!? not really sure if there is any significance to the red lighting or not there was also mention of the heads being closed chambered not exactly sure what that means but it sounds good. if anyone is knowledgeable on this problem I am having it would be of much help to me!

you can buy svt badges out of any mustang magazine, and if it was an svo, it would be a turbocharged 4cyl and the center part of the headlights would be reccessed into the body...3.73:1 gears just means its going to take off harder and reduce you top end speed and reduce your gas mileage. im not sure what closed chambered heads are but if someone else tells us i guess we will both know...

Somebody stuck those badges on there, all svo were turbo 4banngers and svt wasnt around in 86. The only fox bodied svt was the 93 cobra.

the car runs GREAT!.. only thing that has been done to it thus far is a tranny rebuild only cause i didnt trust it....the engines imaculate!!! i pulled the dip stick when i first got it and the oil was clean... even after i drove it around for a week or so still came out clean... it has about 170K on it....and runs like the first day off the lot!! Thank you guys for all your help if you have any parts or know anyone that has any for this year model please let me know im looking to how do you say.... refurbish it a little.... being that the previous owners didnt do a very good job of taking care of it! BTW i bought it for 160 dollars!! With a clear title!!

So im assuming by the choices that where available during that year i just have the 3 door GT ... i'm cool with that. I know its stock but id love to put it on the track just to see what its really got.... legally!!

What are the opinions on supercharger vs. turbo?!! one better than the other? As you can tell im not big on the mustangs as far as knowledge, im a chevy truck man but this was an offer i couldnt pass up.

lets not forget there was also the t-top model.

the 86 high-swirl heads suck but it does have forged flat top pistons.but if you run a bigger cam they will need to be notched.

i had an 86 GT and at first i wasnt really fond of the four eyed foxes. but they grew on me fast. and 86 is probally my favoite year for the Fox. i had the Red dash lights in mine so im sure they came from the factory that way.

Remember everybody - older cars need love too. Some paint and a little TLC and she'll be gorgeous.

The SVO was a great foundation for building on: Better suspension, brakes I believe it was 4wheel disk on 5 lug wheels. Over all better looking body panels ("b" pillar, tail lights). Would rather start with that than a GT

I believe there were 17 convertables (SVOs) that were produced (you here nothing of them) that are not showing on your build list

SVO featured several key modifications over the standard Mustang to help increase performance. The front suspension geometry was modified, a 15:1 ratio power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering system replaced the standard system, a limited slip, 3.73:1 Traction-Lok axle was added, a new, ventilated four-wheel-disc braking system replaced the GT's disc/drum setup, specially designed pedals were used to aid "heel and toe" shifting and a complete Koni suspension system featuring specially tuned adjustable struts, shocks, and horizontal dampers replaced the setup used on the Mustang GT. Five-lug, 16 x 7 inch aluminum wheels wearing P225-16 Goodyear Eagle VR 50 "Gatorback" tires were standard as well.

Interior features included adjustable sport seats with lumbar supports, a leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel, shift lever, and emergency brake handle, power windows, door locks and A/C and a premium stereo system, options that weren't normally found on small American coupes. However, an optional Competition Prep package deleted many of those features to save weight.
