Question

timming problems

I have a 87 mustang with a ford motorsports mass air conversion and computer A9S. When I set my timming and go to put back my computer sencor ( located near distributor) My timming jumps like 20 degrees and the engine shuts off. the car is all stock. Could it be my conversion or something to do with timming? Need Help!!

When did the problem start? Something is majorly wrong.

Yeah! I read one of your guys thread on timming. does it matter if I put the spout connector back in while it's running, or shut it off first? I also modded a cold air intake from a 4.6, with like a 76mm MAF tube and my stock MAF sencor on it, you think that would make a difference why it would shut off like that?

No, it doesn't matter if you have the car running or shut off when you put the spout in. When did this problem start?

I bought a shell and put the 91 motor in it my self. and the conversion was already in the shell when I bought the car. the motor ran perfect before I pulled it. I had a guy put a new timming chain on it hooked up all the wiring and then I ran into this prob. I found out that it could be a seal around your harmonic balancer, if that has worn out the balancer could have moved throwing the timming off?

if ur balancer was bad, u would have a bad vibration, bad. dont use MAF housing from different vehicles, different computer readings even though it will be for the same injectors.

The balancer is a possibility but a long shot. 0 on the balancer should line up with the key slot in the center of the balancer where the bolt goes thru. You will have to take the bolt out to check this.

Not necessarily. If the ring spins on the balancer it doesn't always mean you will have a vibration. I've seen the rings on these balancers spin on alot of cars when the rubber breaks down and none of them had any vibrations except the ones where the balancer actually fell apart. Of course that doesn't mean that it can't cause a vibration, I'm just saying I've seen this problem often without a vibration.

Its prolly not related, but I wouldnt put a stock sensor, in a random meter. THere are 3 places to mess up the signal. The sensor, the meter, and the maf tables in the computer. any 1 of those being off will mess with the readings.
