Do you have the pushrods for the cam? or springs/retainers? If yes, then install those as well, and you're good to go

Yeah, you need specific pushrod lengths, spring ratings and probably retainers, and maybe rocker setups as well. That is supposed to be a good cam from what Ive heard. I would also at least port/polish the stock heads, or think about upgrading.

no...what im saying is, thats a bad cam to use on the stock heads. there's not enough airflow for the lift. If your going to use that cam, either get some better heads, or have your heads ported..

basically hes right u could use it on the stock heads and u would see a gain but not much, now if u port the heads u would see a pretty decent gain, but yea aftermarket is the way to go

You might see a bit more power with that cam but I think the major thing you will notice is throttle response. It should be a noticeable improvement but don't expect big horsepower numbers. Make sure you change your valve springs.

u could find some used heads afr's for like 700 or some edelbrock for pretty cheap.

and yea gt40p's would be a good head to go wit. then have them ported out and they flow better than the afrs so gt40p is good its what im doin and the cam im using is huge

Ported GT40Ps won't flow anywhere near an AFR head.

Don't forget to suggest a new set of pistons since he will need them too if he bolts on a set of AFR 185s. AFR 165s would be a much better option for him for both horsepower and cost.

Hell yeah he is...

The afr165s flow a good 55cfm over the gt40p heads on the intake side @ .500" lift if im correct. Gt40p heads wont touch an AFR165 head, and they cant even see 185s. Somebody told him a HUGE lie when they said gt40p heads flow better than AFRs. Go to any real shop that does real work on mustangs and tell that bullsh*t to someone there and see if they dont laugh in your face. No disrespect, but you have no idea what you're talkin about.

If you're using a huge cam with gt40p heads, you're choking the hell outta your engine. Either that, or you dont know the definition of huge.

98 Explorer GT-40 heads, bone stock, replaced the springs to some trickflow springs that summit recommended. Installed Stage II Trickflow Cam, had timing adjustments made by a friend of mine... No choking, spits, misses, pops and pings nor power lag. With the current setup I make slightly 300hp. I still have some work to do on the darn car.

Now don't get me wrong, I listen to these guys when I run across posts from them like darrell. So what they are saying is something you will never hear from those unexperienced dummies at the Ford shop, but at the same time others will say you can make more horsepower out of stickers and fart pipes but these guys will tell you what needs to be done.

Hell, thanks to some of these guys, I got the right parts the first time and got my 3.73 gears.
