Tried and true way to get 300-320 rwhp?

I have been searching around and have seen quite a few different setups that would be good for what I want. I have been tossing around quite a few different idea. I just want some of your opinions and setups.

What I want:

300-320 whp
N/A no boost or spray.
Affordable, I'm not made of money but I'm not on a super strict budget either.

There are many ways to get that much horsepower. I guess you need to define what affordable is first.

To get that kind of hp to the wheels N/A, the easiest way would be an expensive H/C/I swap or build a 331 or 347 stroker

Haha, I know this is just a typical Mustank comment so I will refrain from being a dick in return.

No, actually I would like the car to run well at the track but I will be using the dyno as a tuning tool. I don't really care if I have 12 hp or 500 as long as I have a good running setup that gets results.

Thanks for your input.

Yeah I have actually looked into all 3 options. My stock block has 77k miles on it and hasn't been romped on. As far as long term which is the better option?

What setup are you running to get the times in under your avatar? NVM, just checked your garage. Nice car.

well the tfs top end kit is a proven 300 to the wheels out of box so couple that with porting etc but you should really put dollar figure down to how much your limit is. I think that would help gauge what parts can be used and what can't be.

I'd say around 2k give or take, just depends on if I sell another one of my cars then that figure might go up substantially.

2k start hunting the used parts section.

that barely gets you heads and intake new.

closer to 3k after all the misc stuff you will need.

I'm not opposed to going with used parts. I also already have some odds and ends as far as parts. I can actually get a '97 exploder upper and lower for dirt cheap, so if I went with that, bought a nice set of heads, a good cam, and then a nitrous kit what do you think of that?

I would rather go with N/A but was kinda thinking about what flyin ryan said. I could probably pick up a Zex wet kit for pretty cheap from a buddy.

Could I break 300 with the Exploder intake, good heads, and a custom grind cam? If so I wouldn't need the shot.

^^^^ Along with supporting mods to go with H/C/I, then yes, you will break the 300rwhp mark. AFR 185 with custom cam will put you where you want to be.

I'd use the stock short block. 77K isn't bad and if it runs good now it will be fine with some upgrades.

2K might be tough. You will need:
- heads
- head bolts
- cam
- intake
- rocker arms
- valve springs
- gaskets
- misc. parts

Start looking for some Canfield or Trick Flow Twisted Wedge heads used. You should be able to find them all over. Even AFR165s will work if you can't find anything else. A cam like Comp Cams XE276HR will work other wise if you have the extra cash I'd have Camshaft Innovations grind one for you. Pass on the Explorer intake. I would look for a Systemax or maybe a TFS Track Heat or R-series intake. All of these parts will put you in the horsepower range you are looking at and on a slick will run high 11s in the 1/4 if you can drive.

AFR185s won't work with stock pistons without cutting bigger valve reliefs.

Probably since realistically they only support about 300 or so flywheel horsepower.... I'd get a set of 24lb or 30lb injectors if it was my project.
