buying used gears got a few questions...

just got a few questions going to pick up a set gears from a guy wondering how i can make sure they're 4.30's like he says i know to count the teeth...so should be 43 on the ring and 10 on the pinion right? also i had heard that u had to have a special pin that goes thru the diff to install the 4.30's...anyone heard of this...also since im going from stock 3.27's to 4.30's will i notice a huge difference in the car? thanks in advance guys

It will feel like a different car. Why 4.30's though?

I would'nt go with 4.30s, you will be running really high rpm's all the time, thats me though depending on what you have done and how much you drive it i think 4.10s is a good all around gear.

You are going to hate those 4.30s. First gear is going to be useless. Your left leg and right arm are going to get huge from all the shifting you will be doing.

You can either get a notched pin or grind a couple teeth on the ring gear. I know it sounds redneck to grind teeth but it is very common and Randy's Ring and Pinion actually has an article recomending it on their site. I wouldn't go the grinding route if you don't have much mechanical ability though. Yes you will notice a difference with the gears.

you are not going to like 4.30's if you drive your car further then the corner store. i had 4.10's in my car when it was a 5 speed and it screams down the road at 45mph

the little bit of money you are going to save on the gear will be quickly surpassed by the gas mileage you are going to loose.

you can find a nice set of used 3.73's for 50-75.00 easy

and yes you are going to notice a huge difference in your car. if you go with a 4.30 you will be at the top of 3rd before your out of the intersection.

thanks for the advice, i dont think the 4.30's will be all to bad, i've had 2 friends that have had them in their car one was an 89 notch, the other was a 96 cobra, both loved it...my buddy witht he 89 notch said he drove his car quite a few times on long road trips and stuff, said he never had much problem with it, said around 60-70 mph he would be somewhere around 2800 rpm...to answer someone else's question about how much i'm paying for the gears i'm gettin them for $50 bucks. they've got about 1800 miles on them.

Down the highway isn't so bad because you have overdrive. Its normal city driving that will get old unless you enjoy shifting more than twice as much as you do now. One thing is for sure, the gears will wake your car up.

cool yea something needs to, i put those bigger rims on it, and the car is noticeably slower than before. went from stock 16 inch pony wheels to 17x9's in the front and 17x10.5 in the back...the car felt alot slower once i put them on.

Used gears are fine as long as they were installed correctly before/arent damaged.
