simple 3g wiring question

Wanting to do a 3g swap here soon..

On the 3 g, it has a 3 wire plug, stator plug, power wire and ground.

Ground is ground
Power wire is a 4g to solenoid
Stator wire runs to middle wire on plug
Left (yellow) wire runs to 12v
Green goes to dummy light...

But that's where I get confused. Can the green just use any 12v wire, or where do I need to run that to? My factory charging harness is garbage, so any help would be very useful.

All I have left to get my car on the road is the charging system and clutch... please help!

if you are talking about a key switched item, then find a fuse that has power when the key is on and strip your wire, put it in the fuse hole and put the fuse back in.

It has to go to the green wire or your voltage regulator will not work due to the resistor thing in the gauge lite.

Basically the wight wire goes right back to the alternator stator and the thick wires go to the back. Green needs to hook up to the green wire in your alternator wiring. and yellow can just go back to the alternator + post, but you should put a fusible link in. Also make sure you use a fusible link or mega fuse in the 4 ga charging wire. If you ever blow a alt diode pack the fuse will blow before your car starts on fire, which is good.

I'm confused, where is this green wire coming from? The D shaped connector is the same as the fox body connector so you can use the one on the car without modifying it or the wires. The rectangle connector is the only one you need to modify.

I just did this yesterday and it only took about 20 minutes. I ordered this from PA Performance. No need to use the factory wiring harness.

Have you run it much since the install? How do you like it? I've had a few self exciting (one wire) alternators and hated them. My experience has been at idle they charge very little if at all. Hopefully what you have is better than the Chevy style alternators that I've used.

Yeah, if you have a 2 wire regulator but as far as I know all 87-93 Mustangs are 3 wire. No adapter harness is needed for a 3G on an 87-93 Mustang.

Will not work correctly without the green wire and 500 ohm resistor unless it is built to work without it (i.e. self exciting one wire deal).

All of that is already in place on 87-93 Mustangs so I'm still confused. I'm wondering if he cut the original plug off and threw it away.

Superbean, what year is your car? And please help with my confusion...

The car is a 1988 2.3 lx..

Stock harness fits the alternator fine, just a bit tight, but it should work. It's not working though, so I just wanted to bypass all the factory wiring as I've rewired everything else from scratch.

Ignition, Fuel pump, fans, Push start are all controlled by made from scratch relays, so why not an independent alternator. lol

well i went ahead and ordered a 3g alternator setup with a one wire regulator.

Since pa perf and late model resto make replacement 1 wire volt regualtors, i'll just go that route.

yeah, the only wire you have to modify is the white wire to go to the stator plug and the thick wires to the back of the alt.

But if that isn't working, maybe the problem is in one of the fusible links.

The one wire set-up will work. Make sure you use a megafuse or fusible link on that one wire.
