Ok this probly a dumb question but...

Putting in gears like 3.73 dosent throw of the odometer right? Im 99.9% sure they dont but just checkin and if you want to why im asking a seamingly stuipid question well the answer is simple. My friend miller light has taken over most rational thoughts in my brain for one and two i saw this on carsoup YELLOW 1987 Ford Mustang GT (Car/Truck) located in the Fargo, ND area.

Actually it does.

If you going from a 3.08 gear (which you prob have) then it will be different.

yes it does.

the odometer reads correctly still, but the gears do not, so it is an invalid reading from the odometer.

I have 3,73's. I also have low profile tires and my speedometer is off by 5 mph, so thats due to the tires right?

it sure does, and the crappy parts is that 23 tooth speedo gear is suppose to be enough for 3.55, 3.73 and 4.10s. sucks huh?

obviously it messes up the odometer. if the car thinks its going faster than its going to rack up the miles quicker therefore an incorrect odometer reading because of the speedometer reading too fast due to the gears

You could always go someplace that you know is "X" miles away and then do the trip thing.

i always use the "fake" radar detectors that flash if your going to fast on the highway.....try that....stay at a constant speed and compare with your speedo.....

Even if you switch the speedo gear to the correct one you car will still be off by a few mph. To correct that you don't only have to change the speedo gear but the gear located inside your transmission so they both match up with whatever ratio you put into your rear end. I forget the name of the gear im referring to but it's nothing special but since you have to crack the trans open to do so most people shy away from it and just learn to deal with the mph being off
