short belt

I had an 84.5" belt on my fox because my smog pump seized. It's been squeaking and I realized the tensioner was all the way down and the belt was bouncing on the part between the alternator and the harmonic balancer. I put in an 83.5" and its all good. Just wondering if anyone else had this problem because I know everyone runs the 84.5 but it was too long for my car.

I run an 82-1/2" belt... No smog pump, Belt is around the A/C, power steering, alt, waterpump and crank... the crank pulley is underdrive, not sure about the others. One of the previous owners did that.

Gates part # K060820 for the 82.5" belt.

You can't just remove the A/C, you need to relocate the power steering pump or the belt will rub when it crosses itself above the water pump pulley.

Or you can get one of those A/C delete kits.. it comes with a dummy pulley that fits where the A/C compressor used to be.

Some people actually use these dummy kits when they remove the smog pump. I don't, but some people claim the smog pump or smog pump dummy pulley relieves extra tension on the alternator bearings.

The power steering pump relocation would keep it cleaner under the hood as well as reduce rotating mass though. Probably the best bet.

i took off my a/c and smog pump. it didnt rub, but does come close. i drilled a new hole in the alt. bracket for the tab on the tensioner so i could rotate it and put more tension. i eventually got an alt. kit( from march) with a tension bar and it looks awsome.
