Cool challenge but I think they both failed as far as horsepower goes. The teams were given a short block and then another $5000 for the rest of the parts. So essentially they had $9600 invested for 488hp. That is a pretty steep price to pay for that little of horsepower.

they had to but everything tho....oil pump, pan and full ignition also....i bet it would have made a lil better with FI with the same heads and cam....idk i ges....i was kinda suprised the guys won with the 185 afr vs the 193 trickflow heads with the little bit of porting and what not

I don't care what they had to do, $9600 for 488hp is a joke. I'd have to sit down and do some calculating but I think that is about how much I had into a big inch Windsor that made over 700hp. I know I've made more power than that with a 347 for less money but then again $4600 for a street short block is kind of outragous. Are you sure they had to buy a full ignition? I can't see why they would when the dyno has an ignition system.

As far as the heads vs. hp goes, the AFR headed engine had close to 1 point higher compression (11.1:1 versus 10.3:1)and possibly a better matched camshaft. They never did give much for cam specs. The other guys were using high ports with a cam that did the heads no justice. No, I don't know the cam specs but I do know that it was a Trick Flow cam which leaves only 3 options, all of which are 302 cams.

In their defense, I guess you are only as good as the tools you have to work with and they weren't given much for tools with the Ford Racing short block being mandatory.

You also have to take that they are kids still in school into consideration.

yeah i agree....that expensive short block makes it sound worse than the it is....still im sure there are better combos for the price....there was a 347 on youtube that was advertised 475 rwhp....thats crazy
