Odd MAF and computer chip problems

I started the car the other day and it began to run rough about two minutes after starting it. Shortly after the check engine light came on. The idle was up and down. I took it to get a diagnostic at a local shop. I was watching the scanner when the codes came up. About 5 poped up. He asked me if there was an aftermarket chip in the computer. I never put one it, but someone before me did. The scanner told him to take it out, so he did, and the codes were down to 2. The MAF, and a cannister purge, which i never heard of. He said it was some kind of emission thing. I am going to replace the MAF but my brother has a fox body 302. mine is a 94. He bought a BBK fenderwell kit with MAF included that he is now getting rid of. Can i put that MAF on mine? Also, why would the computer chip make it run like crap? It's a diablo chip. When i first got the car it ran great. AND WHAT THE HELL IS A CANNISTER PURGE?
Thanks guys.

Its a solenoid that purges gas tank fumes into your intake.

Was it a burned chip or an off the shelf "universal" chip? Either way it was most likely wrong for your set up and having other issues (codes) could have triggered false codes from the chip.
