power steering whining

I did a quick search but came up nothing, hopefully its okay I make a thread on this.

I am trying to fix squeeling or whining that is coming from my power steering. It does it when the car is at rest, say in my driveway, and Im turning the wheel. It whines.

So I was at another forum and they said it can be fixed, even though I thought it was something that was normal on some power steering cars.

CAn this be fixed? they mentioned something about lubing under a boot. I took off one of the boots on one side of the rack but I dont see how lubing that would help, but I just dont know.

It would be cool to have a silent steering wheel lol

thanks guys!

most people dont realize to totally flush a ford p/s system you have to put vacuum on the system. Theres a small corner in the pump that will hold an air pocket.

This is VERY common with Ford's...it would be nothing to worry about with performance but if you just dont want the whine then I think you have to buy a brand new pump

My current 88 nd my old 87 both whined. The 87 seemed to do it worse. I flushed it in my 88 and filled it with ATF and it isn't as loud and desn't leak anymore lol

I searched google for an hour trying to find the proper way to do it. I ended up pulling off the return hose and draining it. Then I filled it with ATF, turned the car on and cranked the wheel lock to lock like 10 times then shut the car off and drained it. I did this like 5 times until the fluid was coming out clean. I know theres another way I wanted to try. Instead of what I did, you unplug the return line and cap off the fitting on the pump and let it pee out the fluid through the return line with the car idling and someone turning the wheel. But you gotta keep pouring in fluid so the pump doesn't run dry. Either one will work.
