Intake Gaskets suck...

i just put an explorer intake on about 2 months ago and now the stupid rubber seal on the front of the lower intake starts to leak....

is there an easier fix for this?
if i have to pull the upper and lower intake off, does anyone have suggestions on how to prevent this from happening again?

Possibly get a better quality gasket from your Ford dealer instead of a cheap Auto Zone imitation.

I replaced a few original 1989 seals on my car with 230k miles... the diff pinion seal and the T-5 tranny output shaft seal. I used Auto Zone seals.. I figured hell they had them in stock and they were only a few bucks each. I installed them and drove the car down the road, about 1 mile. Oil was already running out of them.

I was PISSED. But, I decided to bite the bullet.. went to my local FORD dealer, ordered the seals for about $20 EACH, and put them in. NO leaks at all. Its been about 30k miles since then, and still no leaks.

If you buy cheap parts to fix something, you will end up having to REdo it, and buy the quality stuff anyway.

My motto is:
"Buying cheap merchandise to save money is like stopping a clock to save time."

Next time throw those rubber end gaskets out and use a thick bead of RTV. Make sure you set the intake on while the RTV is still wet.

This was no cheap gasket...

I purchased the fel-pro head set. Fel-pro is good stuff. it was the rubber ones not cork.

its just such a pain to seat them right... its a lot of work to do that lower set again.

I'm gonna RTV the hell out of it and see what happens. worst case scenario i buy a new set and use tons of RTV next time...

thanks guys

Just to clearify... is the RTV instead of the gasket(no gasket at all)? Also I've heard that it's best to let the RTV sit for a few minutes and get "tacky", is this an old wives tale? Or just simply not true.

Don't use the front and rear seal pieces that come with intake gaskets. Even if they are some type of rubber they are prone to leaking. Ditch those pieces and uses some sort of RTV, I prefer Permatex "Right Stuff"

More is not better at all

The stuff that squirts out is not doing you any good (maybe short term it is) and if too much squirts out, it will break away and be floating around in your oil/coolant.

Think of RTV and gaskets like leveling materail used on cerarmic tile floors or putty/body filler on a body part. It is only there to smooth out the imperfections between two layers, not provide support or for a buildup.

I used the rubber ones with a thick bead of rtv under the rubber, no problems.

Make sure you do not use the end gaskets when you use RTV. That is the correct way to do it and have it leak free. 90% of shops that do Ford intake gaskets do it this way, including dealerships.

Correct, no end gasket. RTV with the end gaskets will cause them to squeeze out and/or leak most of the time. I never let the RTV get tacky. I want it to firmly attach to the bottom of the intake so it doesn't leak.

OK, you were referring to those gaskets that are on front and back... trans side and distibutor side. Sorry if I'm not grasping this concept to quikly.
