Question

old gas?

Car was stored 2 winters ago and only fired up about 3 times since, don't ask me why but I never put stabilizer in but I put it in today and some octane boost. Car had a full tank (premium gas) when stored and fires up first crack every time although it smells a little funky. Will I kill my car or sjouke the stabilizer and better octane get me through this tank fine?

or just drive it real easy, and refill with premium. Does it have a wood grain varnish smell?

Two year old gas can do more damage than people think. It can cause valves to start to stick open as the varnish breaks loose and travels through the fuel system. Amongst other known problems. Drain the tank and flush the system.

How much gas is in the tank? Just fill it up with some good gas and drive it.

Show me a valve that sticks open and I'll show you a broken valve spring. Valves don't stick unless there is a mechanical failure.

My Father just had to go through stuck valves in a head because of bad gas on a Toyota pick up truck. I know it can happen. It can clog your injectors also. The valve sticks open due to the varnish getting into the valve guides. Some worse than others. There was nothing wrong with the valve springs either.

That is one of the most foolish things I've ever heard. If a valve sticks open and the valve is still in one piece and the spring and retainer is still attached then the spring has to be so worn out that it will not function properly anymore (mechanical failure). Familiarize yourself with a valve train and you will understand why this simply doesn't happen unless there is a mechanical failure.

Familiarize myself with how a valve train works? Before you under mind me, let me tell you that I am a second generation engine builder. My Father is near 60 and has been doing it since was 15. Under his supervision, I built my first engine at the age of 13, an opposed 4 cylinder Volkswagon 1600cc engine, now I am 33y/o. I'm not trying to brag about my nor my Fathers knowledge, but trust me, we can hold our own when it comes to engine building and how the valve train is affected by tarnished fuel. Maybe it is you that needs to do some research. I hope for goodness sakes your not one of these super internet forum engine builders.

Well good for you. Apearently valvetrain is something you need to study more.

No I'm not a "super internet forum engine builder", I have a bit of experience....

I would agree with this.

And I would trust Darrell's judgement over most people on this forum.

That's weird but I have a 1964 cadillac coupe de ville that I started and drove with 4 year old gas two years ago and I have had no problems. But I'm not an engine builder either. I've only built handful of motors so i'm not up to your standards. I can build some beasts online thought. wana e race bro?
