Sand the car down like others have mentioned, then I used rustoleum primer in a spray gun (w/ air compressor), after that I hit it with a few coats of rustoleum base coat. Then I purchased a real automotive clear coat (the most expensive part of the whole operation) It cost like 140$ with the accelerator/hardener. I mixed in some pearl & metal flake from here Custom Paint | Pearl Paint | Candy Paint | Metal Flake | Faux Finish | Temperature Change|Paint for your Hot Rod, Chopper, Home, or Business! and it doesnt look half bad.

Learn from my mistakes though
1) Be extremely patient
2) The prep work is 9/10th's of the work, DO NOT SKIMP THEIR.

Also i do recommend using an automotive clearcoat so it stands up to the elements, And make sure you use wet sanding, dry doesnt work too well.

Spending more on a paint job then what i paid for the car wasnt an option for me...
you can do the same style paint job with a wagner sprayer or a roll on brush. for $75 you can do a roll on paint job that looks great (if you want to spend a lot of time doing it)

Hey man I went to macco and paid around 800 for my paint job, he had to strip it down and re-primer it and then spray the pain... yes it is a macco paint job, but compaired to the 2600 i was quated at other shop i couldnt be happier. yeah he didnt do the engine bay or door jams but the hood and roof dont have the faded sun look anymore. give them a shot man, the economy paint job from macco may be what your looking for. I went one step up.
