My car needs a paint job - and that means I gotta sell it...or do I?

One reason I'm selling my car - the main reason - is because
I can't afford a $3000 or $4000 paint job. It's not that I'm
broke, I'm not, I just don't have a lot of discretionary income
to throw around.

Here's how I got to where I am: a while back I walked outside
to take a look at my car. I saw something I'd never seen before.
I saw several areas where rust was starting to take root. Some
of you know what that means. Some of you have been there
before, in my shoes.

Thanks to the new found rust, I was now at a crossroads.
It was right then and there that I decided that since I can't
afford a 3-4K paint job I'd have to do something I don't want
to do: sell the car.

I'm wondering, is there another way out? I mean, is
there a cheaper alternative that would allow me to
keep my Mustang, or is a $3-000 or $4000 paint job
the only option for a 21 year old car that reaches
this point in its life? If there isn't a way out of this
predicament don't be afraid to say so 'cause unlike
Tom I can handle the truth... yo!

Nice YJ HMUSN. Daily driver?
To the OP, it really depends what you want to do with your car. If you do all the prep work yourself, including dealing with the rust, it shouldn't cost 3000 dollars. However, judging by the assigned parking blocks, I'd guess you live in like an apartment or a condo meaning you might not have access to the necessary space or tools to do that. I can say, though, that rust spots will decrease the value of the car if you try to sell it. From the pics, though, that looks like surface rust, which isn't too bad.

yea it's a DD; thanks. That looks like surface rust like you said. that is an easy paint job for me if you like flat black You could take it to maaco and pay like $600 to have it repainted. They won't do the jambs or engine bay though.

Yes, exactly, good call, 91_gt_5.0, I do live in an apartment and so I'm going to contract the work out...once I evaluate all my options.

I'm with HMUSN Take some sand paper to it and rattle can it.

If all else fails just get a primer down. Then call your paint guys and see how much it would be JUST to mask it and paint it. If you do all the prep it should cost 3-4K. Maybe still 1-2. But it's better than selling it.

I'll check car clubs and Craigslist to find someone who moonlights for extra money. And maybe I can find a tech school in the San Diego area who will do it as a class project.

If I can keep the cost at or below 1K then I'll keep the car, which would be swell! I was thinking all along that what I need is a "custom paint job". My thinking was wrong!

A CPJ includes painting the engine area, right? Heck, I don't need that! While this car looks real sharp and gets compliments with a clean body and a brand new looking convertible top, IT'S NOT A SHOW CAR so I don't need to have the engine well painted. I can get by without having the engine well painted.

Maybe that's why I was thinking all along that it would cost 3 or 4 thousand California dollars, 'cause it would be a CPJ and all the labor that goes with stripping the car down, including the painting of the engine well.

That's what I'm gonna do. Everyone bags on Macco but I'd rather have a cheap paint job than no paint job.

My car didn't have rust, but I did paint it myself.

Sand the car down like others have mentioned, then I used rustoleum primer in a spray gun (w/ air compressor), after that I hit it with a few coats of rustoleum base coat. Then I purchased a real automotive clear coat (the most expensive part of the whole operation) It cost like 140$ with the accelerator/hardener. I mixed in some pearl & metal flake from here Custom Paint | Pearl Paint | Candy Paint | Metal Flake | Faux Finish | Temperature Change|Paint for your Hot Rod, Chopper, Home, or Business! and it doesnt look half bad.

Learn from my mistakes though
1) Be extremely patient
2) The prep work is 9/10th's of the work, DO NOT SKIMP THEIR.

Also i do recommend using an automotive clearcoat so it stands up to the elements, And make sure you use wet sanding, dry doesnt work too well.

Spending more on a paint job then what i paid for the car wasnt an option for me...
