Rebuilt AOD trans not working?
I installed an AOD transmission to my 1990 Ford mustang with a 5.0l v-8. The torque converter was rebuilt as long as the transmission at the same place. Well I installed everything but the speedometer cable because I haven't ran the new cable. So after taking the car off the jack stands I put ATF in the fill tube and ran the car switching the through the gears ( I did put a quart of atf in the torque converter before installing it) And it still won't move.. it seems as if the transmission fluid isn't being pumped because the fill tube stick looks as if the transmission fluid is just sitting in the fill tube... is there anything I could do to figure this out? Could it be the transmission lines because I didn't replace them? Could it be the torque converter?.... Everything is practically new and I have a lot of time into this project... very frustrated

I wasnt really aware that people rebuilt torque converters, your suppose to replace it. but how much fluid did you put in it, usually cars take like 8 to 12 quarts when the whole system is completly empty, usually just cranking the motor will pump the fluid and circulate it, as the TC is driven by the engine as is the tranny pump, the TC is probally drastically low on fluid as they take much more then 1 quart

The converter is bolted to the flexplate, correct? I'm not trying to make you sound stupid but simple things like this people miss. Humans make mistakes.

that and sometimes the TC doesnt just slide and click in once, you sometimes have to keep twisting and wiggiling it in, sometimes it clicks into about three things.
just making sure it was put in right

sounds like the torque converter wasn't seated right and thats why its not turning. Low on fluid and you will still turn but it will seem off until the fluid fills the TC. But like darrell said, odds are if the TC wasn't installed right the pump is probably broken. So best thing you can do is to try to re seat it and try again. But dont try to start it anymore, maybe you will be lucky and nothing has broken yet

my guess is either the pump is rubbish, TC isnt on right, forward band isnt appling, who rebuilt it? do they have a good reputation? theres alot of easy ways to screw up an auto

I definately have enough fluid in the transmission about 10-12 quarts, the TC was bolted to the flex plate and the TC wasn't rebuilt it was replaced. I was told though that if the TC isn't on correctly it wouldn't fit exactly right when the transmission is bolted to the engine. And the TC was rotated quite a bit and I heard 3 clunks and it sat pretty nicely in the housing, but this is my first time ever doing this kind of install.

Everything can still fit with the converter out of the pump. When you have the engine bolted to the transmission, there should be a small gap between the converter and flexplate. When you put the bolts in it will draw the converter tight to the flexplate. It is possible to screw this up. I've seen it happen a few times.
