heads and gaskets on a budget

so im going to replace my head gaskets, finally

and since the car is going into the shop to have the bad headgaskets replaced may as well put new heads on

i can spend about 800 on heads and gaskets
already paying 1300 for labor

dont have the time/knowledge/tools required to do it myself
and there is a mustang specific shop in my town that has been recomended

so what should i go for heads/gaskets

and i am not interested in pulling old heads of an explorer

i really want the twisted wedge, i hear all the time how good they are but im on a budget

i was looking at gt40 but not sure how much of an improvement they will be
i could go 800 tho for the twisted wedge

im hearing fel-pro for the gaskets
what all will be removed to do the heads, i want to buy as many gaskets as i can, i figure if they are removing the parts migfht as well get new gaskets on

are the gt40's a good upgrade or should i go for something higher

and if i do go gt40's which ones will work with my stock fit headers, the gt40p or the gt40x

$1300 for labor????? You could drive the car to me, get a hotel room, pay me to r&r the heads, drive 1800 miles back home and still not pay $1300. That is outrageous!!!!! Shop around.

i will shop arround but i got the quote for removing the old and putting on the new, new gaskets, new heads, new lower and new upper

but if you all say 1300 is too much i will shop arround

i assumed it would take 10 to 12 hours at 100 an hour for labor

The local shops around here normally will do a HCI swap for $500-$700 including oil change and anti freeze. $1,300 is freaking ridiculous IMO. I have no idea what book rate is for the labor but no way would I pay that much.

paying for stock heads = screw that lol

All you need is a socket set and torque wrench.. not that hard at all man..

Is there any way you could try to tackle it yourself?

no not for stock, did you read my first post im trying to find a good set of heads because i am supplying the heads

but so many people telling me its too much i am def ganna shop arround more

i doubt i will be so lucky to find somone to do a h/c/i swap for me for 500-700 but im def ganna try

my original question is i have about 1000 to spend on my h/c and ill do the intake later, what is going to be the best gain for my budget

i obviously want to do trickflow twisted wedge but i doubt i will find any for less than 1000 so what are some other good choices

and i stated befor i dont want to go into a pick'n pull or junkyard to yank heads of something else and then have them worked on, i want something new or already re-worked

Any labor price is going to include all of that. R&R heads on a Mustang books about 8 hours. You have to remove the intake and reinstall the intake to R&R the heads. I'd do this job for $600 and that is gaskets and labor.

Labor is $100/hour by you????

you need to find a new shop.. or some buddies that will do it for a ticket to the race track and a case of beer. ya dig

I have no idea why labor would be 1300 bucks... my shop labor book says two head gaskets should take 7.5 hours. That's like 180 bucks an hour. Be cheaper to have a doctor do your head gaskets.. sheesh

1300 dollars you are being rip-off, most shops charge $65.00 per hour it takes me 3hours tops to replace everything, shop around it does not has to be a mustang specialist to work on a mustang

i paid $65 to have a head gasket replaced on a 2000 mustang last year, you have to know the guys that work out of their own shops on the weekends that have probably forgotten more about cars and engines then most of the joe blows working at the shops up town know

not always what you know but who you know
