Solid Roller vs Hyd. Roller

What are the differences between hyd. a solid performance wise?? I am considering going with this setup on my 91, but I'm not sure if it would be overkill for a forged 306 with AFR 185's or TFS Highports? Thoughts and opinions? Also what would need to be done to accommodate the lifters on a roller block or would I have to get a non hyd. roller block??

They make solid roller lifters that will fit your roller block as OEM lifters do. Solid lift cam/lifter combos make quite a bit more hp and require just a little more maintenance than a hyd set up.

Solid rollers tend to make more power due to being able to increase valve spring rates that allow for more aggressive cams and vise versa. Solid lifters are just that, solid which requires you to set valve lash to buffer the valve train. Hydrualic's use oil pressure to buffer the valve train. You do not need to anything to run solid rollers in a roller block, but it is recommended that you use link bar lifters for reliability, and they are not cheap.

No, you periodicly have to pull the valve covers and check valve lash. It is not hard at all, EFI with large plenums do cause a bit more labor though because you have to remove the upper plenum to remove tha valve covers.

There is some pretty aggressive sounding hyd roller cams out there. Don't just make your decision upon that.

I'm not switch just for that reason. I am trying to make a nasty all motor 306 and I am trying to expand my options on how to make power

Solid roller all the way. No such thing as over kill. Have the cam ground for your combination. Camshaft Innovations has a pretty good deal on Canfield/custom cam and Trick Flow/custom cam packages.

Nothing needs to be done to the block.

Which is very easy to do. Solid is the only way To go. Even if it were my daily driver.

You should not be concerned with sound, you should be concerned with performance. There are a lot of very nasty cars out there that idle like they are stock, they are just set up correctly.

If you are serious about stepping up, I would contacy Camshaft Innovations for a custom tight lash solid roller and head package. The heads would already be set up with the correct parts for the cam. However if you are not ready to buy, do not try to contact him until you are ready. I believe his head and cam packages start at $1800, but don't quote me on that.

I am not ready to buy yet, I am just researching and saving at the moment. The sound isnt the only reason its just a little extra pleasure on my end, but I'm just trying to get the feel for pushrods again since i've been all over mod motors for the past 4 years.
