Tach issues

So, I make a lot of threads, but that's because others don't always give me the best answers to my specific problem. ANYWAYS...

My tach doesn't work correctly. I turn the car on and the tach jumps to about 3,200 RPM's, and I know the car isn't idling that high, duh.
Once you give it gas and it passes that point, it advances like normal. Now I know the stock tach is inaccurate, but I'd just like it to at least look like it works.

Hot or cold start makes no difference, nor does driving vs idling, or when it shifts. It's AOD by the way if that makes any difference.

The tach itself is probably bad. Its not uncommon.

Should I just try and pull it out of the cluster and mess around with it, or what?

Okay, well I don't want an aftermarket one, I just want the one I have to work, like I said in the original post.

He doesn't want an aftermarket tach so quit trying to shove one down his throat.

To the original poster, I have never taken the cluster itself apart so I really don't know anything about the cluster itself. I have taken the entire cluster out and swapped them and that is fairly easy.

If the problem is in the cluster you will probably have to find and another cluster. The wiring mat (not sure of it's true name) is usually not serviceable. You should have no troulbe finding one in a part out.

I have a couple clusters laying around if your car is a 1987 or 1988 Mustang.

Thank you You understand, haha.

Yeah, my speedometer has the "hesitation wiggle" too, so I may just replace the whole thing, any suggestions/places to get the cluster from?
Or install tips?

I don't know where you can get a new one but used clusters are all over Ebay. I have a couple here depending on what year the car is.

Sorry, I don't have a cluster for that. You should be able to find something on Ebay.
