Radiator comparison: Mishimoto v Fluidyne

A customer at my uncles shop I work at was torn between the Mishimoto and Fluidyne radiators, so we ordered both and decided to write up a comparison for everyone.

These are for the 94-95 and 97 stangs, although I'm sure the rest are the same. We looked at 3 areas - the support plate, the shock resistance, and the radiator core. This was meant to be non-objective side-by-side comparison.

The Fluidyne:

The Mishimoto:

1: Support plate

The Fluidyne's support plate was 0.2mm in thickness, and the Mishimotos was 2.0mm (measured with a micrometer)

The Fluidyne also had no welding in the support plate, while the Mishimoto's was strongly welded.

The Mishimoto radiator plate has two layers, one is the support plate and the other is the side plate. The Mishimoto unit is much stronger.

2: Shock resistance

The Fluidyne has a hollow tube design, and the Mishimoto is a solid tube

3: The core

Mishimoto has a three row core as opposed to the Fluidyne's two row, enforcing the shock resistance of the Mishi even more.

Our conclusion:

Based on these factors in the visual side-by-side comparison, the Mishimoto appears to be the stronger unit and the better choice. From what I understand, Mishimoto used to have a two-row design, but changed it to the three row because the two-rows kept breaking. Fluidyne's were having the same problem, but clearly they have not yet switched designs to the more resistant three row.

very nice write up. very cool side by side. and with my fluidyne leaking, might make my replacement be a different brand.

I'd be doing a little more research as the Mishimoto rad's for 99-04 have almost a daily write up on this or any number of web site's as to how they don't fit right & leak right outta the box. I've seen 3 fail myself & you couldn't give me one, IMO complete POS. plus seems a little strange that someone would buy two rad's just to cut up & take pictures of to post on a web site.

I agree, the post sounds too much like a shill. I see the exact post on another site as well including the wrong spelling of Fluidyne in the title. That alone is not really an issue and no big deal but enough to make you wonder.
I also see some other posts and links BurninRubb3r made referencing Mishimoto as well so either it is a really happy customer or these are not true unbiased opinions.

We bought both because whichever one the customer at the time didn't want can just be sold to someone else later... it's called keeping an inventory.

I just copied and pasted from forum to forum, its me in each place. I lurk a lot and I rarely post but I see Mishi get a bad rep in some places, I'm just sticking up for a company that has been good to me, that's all. The rad comparison was meant to be non-objective, if the Fluidyne was better I would have said so. What do I care, neither company was paying me to do this..

I agree with this statement. I've seen aot people complain about the fitment and quality of the Mishimoto crap.

Sounds like a little promotional spam to me....

LOL! Why does everyone assume that someone talking good about a company is spam? Especially when I posted pictures with the differences of both rads?

Fluidyne is a well known company that is known for quality. Mishimoto is a company that has known fitment and quality issues. You come on here saying Mishimoto is fits better, looks better, stronger and overall better quality. Its like you are Mishimoto's spokesman trying to clear their name across the internet.

I guess I see your point. Regardless, it's not completely unheard of for a newer company to make good products. Looks to me like they have fixed their design flaws.

Our customer was happy, that's all I'm really worried about. I was just putting the information I found out there for the members of the forums because similar threads have assisted me in the past.

I run the Mishimoto in my Mach1. No leaks and fit perfect. And at 25 lbs. of boost and 718 rwhp/735rwtq the car never goes above 180-185. Mishimoto is big with the road race guys.
