84 5.0 cant go past 3500 rpm
hey everybody.. im new to mustangs and i have a problem.. first thing is that my car is a capri actually but i cant find any good carpi forums and websites, so i figure since its basically the same car, someone here may be able to help me.. i just bought an 84 capri that has a 302 in it, and when i did a vin search, it came with a 2.3L originally.. well, i guess they decided to use the factory 2bbl feedback carb and eec-iv on the 302, and the car idles fine after it gets warmed up, and it drives fine, doesnt miss or carry on, but if you get it to 3500 rpm, whether just revving, or driving, it will act like theres a rev limiter on it and shut it down... someone told me it may be the egr valve, but im not sure if thats it because theres no egr on the car and nowhere to put one.. the catalyst shows one, but theres not even an egr plate under the carb... so imjust curious, could it need an egr or what in the world could it be?? any help is appreciated...

do you know if they change the tach for a v8 one? i remember reading that the tach's are off and it will read diff rpm. |

If you pull the cluster panel off and look directly under the tach there should be a screw. Around the screw hole are the numbers 4,6 & 8. If im not mistaken this is used to change the setting on the tach to correspond with what size engine is in the car.

thanks for the welcome.. i appreciate yall takin the time to help me out here.. it has an aftermarket tach bolted on the top of the dash set for a v8.. im at a total loss for ideas really?? all i can assume is its either the egr or something isnt working properly with the eec-iv and computer being from a 2300..

Problem fixed... i converted from the eec-iv and electronic ignition to an old points style distributor and coil and it runs great.. goes well over 3500rpm.. thanks everybody for offering help and ideas..

you shouldn't have to be stuck with points althought it will get the job done. There are other options out there.

Points ain't gonna help you boy when the punkinator is in town. Capri or not the fishbowl ain't gonna go fast enough fer me. Haha, man I'm just kidding. Good to see ya on here.
