Like already stated, it allows current to flow in only one direction and it has a slight amount of resistance.

Why use it? The "thing" inside the relay that causes the contacts to open and close is a coil. A coil charges up over time and when the power from the coil is removed, it has natural tendency to want to maintain the current flow. To do that it "discharges" but it is in the opposite polarity. Meaning it will discharge but in the opposite way, putting +12v on the negative side and - on the positive side. This "jolt" or surge can work its way back into the elctrical system and possibly damage things. The purpose of the diode is to absorb this discharging of the coil. Since the diode only passes current in one direction, normal voltage does nothing to it, but when this reverse charge comes though, it passes the voltage through it and its small amount of internal resistance absorbs the charge.

This site has pretty pictures explaining it all

There's perfectly guide on that link that you got. That Diode (look attached pictures) is a protective element. It will protect your ECU for sudden death. Because electric motor can actually sometimes act like ignition coil. When you cut power from it it can generate very high voltage and that does to the ECU same as lightning do to the people. So this Diode will shortcut this behavior and you should use it. I enclose couple of pictures for you to see.
