and not many people know there is supposed to be a plastic sleeve on all the strikers hatch and doors. you can buy replacements at the help section at any autozone. the hatch striker you will have ti cut the washer off to re sleeve it and get a new washer.

I split the length of a new plastic sleeve from the mentioned "Help parts" section with a hacksaw and then slipped it over the striker, that has worked fine for years.

i thought of that but i didnt think it would flex and snap back. cutting the washer off takes a minute with a cutting disk on a grinder but ither way will work i guess

Yeah mine doesn't even have the rubber washer on it. I'm sure it came off at one time but I just had some tape on it. I taped it better and tighter for now and it's good...

I put a new one on my hatch right after I bought the car... the old one didn't have the plastic bushing anymore.... the hatch was hard to shut and it rattled like hell. One new striker later... it closed great and didn't rattle anymore.

It also helps to adjust the striker... it can move up, down, left, and right to line up with the hatch better. Just like a regular door striker.

If the striker is too far down, you will have to slam it hard for it to shut.. if its too high it will not seal all around.. air leak, road noise, etc. Same thing if it is too far to the left or right.. it will try to pull the hatch sideways every time you close it, making it hard to catch.

It can be a pain in the ass to get it just right, but once it is right, it will close easier and not rattle or leak air.

I had tape over news paper and shit for the longest time from the previous owner. I found some nylon spacers at home depot that will fit but I couldn't get the striker off.. I wrapped some electrical tape nice and tight and it shuts great and doesn't rattle at all now haha. It's gonna have to work until I can buy a new one.
