valve spring locks

Whats the trick to these? I'm practicing swapping valve springs on a spare set of heads in the garage. I have my spring compressor. Before I compress the spring, I put a deep socket on the lock, so it doesn't touch the valve. I tap it with a dead blow with a little bit of force.... then I compress the spring, but it does nothing for the locks. There strong as ever. Any pointers.

And were do you find those damn dentist metal picks. They look like they would pull them out.

Yeah, the locks should just fall out once the retainer is pressed down.

I don't understand why you have a socket in there to begin with. If you have a spring compressor that should be all you need

It's used to just hit the top of the spring to "knock everything loose". The socket isn't used for the actual compressing of the spring.

Compress with spring compressor, then give it a gentle tap with a dead blow and watch where the locks fly

The only automobile heads I have dissambled are the stockers off my car. I have taken apart alot of honda motorcycle/atv heads. I always just use my spring compressor.

I'll try hitting the retainer with a good socket, compress the spring, then hit the locks with a plat head and dead blow tomorrow. Hopefully that works.

I'm practicing on some old e7s on a shelf.

Still no luck.... I'm going to put the rope in the engine to hold up the valves and just go ahead and do it on the car I think. I couldn 't even get the locks out with a scrive after they had been hit, and the spring was compressed.
