Engine Shut off while driving
I was driving my 89 5.0 last night, and when I stepped on it in 1st gear, the engine shut off when i was at about 4000 rpm. When I tried to start it again, it would fire but not keep running. I had added in cut off switches on the coil and fuel pump but removed them thinking they were the problem. Removing the switches didn't help. After sitting overnight the car will start up again, but when I rev it, it shuts off. I'm stumped. Where should I start looking?

Get a gauge and check the fuel pressure.

+1 but first check your fuel filter, make sure it's not clogged. then check ur fuel pressure, and maybe pull out a meter and check to see if u fuel pump died on ya, im not totaly sure if you can check the fuel pump tho cause im not sure if you have to remove the tank to pull it/check it. other than that see what kinda voltage your getting off the lines leading to the pump. i could be wrong cause ive never worked on a fox body's fuel system but it's always worth a shot if it's free.

thanks, I appreciate the responses. I cannot get the fuel pressure gauge until tomorrow, but I'm gunna check that for sure. I made a small video so you can see what I mean when I say it fires. How would I check the TFI? Try one that from a different car that I know works? Thanks

Alright, so I don't know how to post a video in my response. Here is the link to the video of what I meant when I said it fires but doesn't continue running. Thanks

When it shut off, did it do so without warning? If so, then it maybe TFI module as mentioned earlier or your distributor.

I checked my fuel pressure today with a gauge. When it primed before starting I was seeing about 45, the car started for about 30 sec, and I saw about 39-40 at idle. It shut off after about 30 seconds. Im definately thinking its related to the tfi in some way.
Thanks

Well the problem was definately in the distributor, probably the tfi. I put in a known good dizzy and the car fired right up. Is there a way that I could pinpoint the problem to the tfi module and if the tfi is the only problem can I just replace the module and not the entire dizzy? Or would I be better off replacing the whole thing? If so what brand is suggested?
